Does this sound like reflux? Help!

DS2 is 4 weeks old and EBF. He feeds every 3 hours like clockwork. I usually feed him for 30-40 minutes on one breast (until he unlatches himself or is no longer actively sucking). I then burp him and keep him upright for a bit. I'll then offer him the second breast which he will take for around 10 minutes. We then burp and stay upright again.

The issue is that he spits up SO much milk. Sometimes up to 1.5 hours after a feed. And it doesn't seem like just a little bit either. We're having to go through multiple baby grow changes a day! He has no issue sleeping on his back so it seems, but does sometimes fuss and grunt whilst feeding.

His spit up is sometimes like curdled milk but other times it's a runnier, clear spit up. So it's not always the same.

I have contacted the health visitor today for advice. Does this sound like reflux?

Is there anything I can be doing to help? Anything I need to be avoiding in my diet that may be triggering the reflux symptoms?

Thank you in advance x

Sounds like it could be... that's long feeds could be cluster feeding or do you think they're struggling with latch? I'd be inclined to break the feedings up a little for winding purposes. A lot of babies do develop a temporary intolerance to cows milk. I cut back on it at around 5/6 weeks and I saw a difference in my wee ones reflux. If I have a lot of dairy in a day I'd noticed he'd become quite colicky and have bad wind again so might be worth looking into.

@Lavender14 thanks for the reply. Is that too long of a feed? Health visitor seemed to think that was ok! I think maybe I'll burp more frequently during the 30-40 minute feed then.

How much cows milk is a lot of cows milk? I have one bowl of cereal in the morning then usually one decaf coffee in the day with a dash of milk. Could this much milk really be causing the reflux do you think?

Sounds normal to me. My dd just had a little tummy so excess came out. Providing baby's not distressed and is gaining weight I wld watch and wait. Even when dd went to formula she never had more than 5oz a time even after turning 1.

You do worry, that's ok. Our jobs is to be aware but try to remain level headed and sensible.

@Angelik thank you! He's gaining weight fine. There are times he's a bit fussy and hard to settle, but I kind of figured that was quite normal so haven't related it to the reflux type symptoms. Otherwise when he's awake and alert, he's pretty chilled out and content! I'll keep an eye on things 😊
