I’ve been breastfeeding now for 2 months and always had the fear of masitis because it means antibiotics and I have a really bad history with antibiotics and then battling to try get rid of stubborn thrush!

The left boob is fine but the right boob, I keep getting this shooting sensation that comes and goes. Dullish sharp? I’ve tried to massage and put some ice as seen mixed view.

is it possible? And can i get rid without antibiotics..agh! If anyone has had what was your experience. How long until improve and say if i give up breastfeeding how can i avoid or would now be time to give up BF - and tie it in

Has there been a crack or an opening on that side?
If so it could be thrush.
Mastitis is not a dull ache. It is a huge ball in your breast, super painful to the touch, hot and gives you fever.

It could also be nothing as having bf three children often get some dull ache during the first few weeks. Like a little bruise inside which turns on and turns off.

AreBearsCatholic · 21/02/2023 14:59

Could it be a milk clot? If it is, a hot shower concentrating on the area can help.

AreBearsCatholic · 21/02/2023 15:01

Giving up bfing without planning in advance is unfortunately often a recipe for mastitis so don’t stop suddenly if you want to avoid that.

Paintingfences · 21/02/2023 15:01

I had mastitis a few weeks ago, 10 months of feeding I had no problem until then. Mine was hot and red, incredibly painful to feed. Like bawling crying while she was feeding, couldn't lift my arm over my head it was so bad. Try warm before a feed and cold after a feed. Doesn't sound like mastitis unless it's the very very start of it....?

I wouldn't be tempted to give up now though, never give up on a bad day.
Also I always get thrush with antibiotics but not for the recent ones I got. Don't think they were nay different than normal but maybe my hormones have changed or something....

No crack or anything different - It’s happening inside the boob quite hard to describe but just shooty sensations that aren’t pleasant no other symptoms yet! But its an ouch when it does!

no pain on feeding, no redness, or fever

Agh hoping it’s not masitis so far it’s just this shooting sensation in the one breast, feeding not causing pain and no redness (yet) if it is start can I prevent)

Shooting pain sounds like thrush. That's what I had with DS, was the same as you describe

Yamaya · 21/02/2023 15:03

Sounds like maybe a blocked duct or a poor latch. Try feeding positioning baby's chin on the sore side. If it's difficult you can lay baby on bed and hovering over the top 😅 it helps clear it if it is a blocked duct.

AreBearsCatholic · 21/02/2023 15:05

No, a milk clot is just a lump of trapped milk. It hurts but you can often solve it at home. If you google it you can find a lot more information. See if you think that’s what it is before applying heat.

Mamoun · 21/02/2023 15:09

This is either nothing. Just your boobs working hard. Or thrush.

Look it up but shooting pain that's a bit random I would say it's nothing and will pass. At least that it my experience!

Twizbe · 21/02/2023 15:15

Give the NCT infant feeding line a ring. Their trained advisors can help you pinpoint the cause of any pain and suggest in person support routes.

Coffeecoffeeinmytummy · 21/02/2023 15:17

I bet it’s thrush. I had it exactly like this.
i have also had mastitis multiple times and it is never a shooting pain. Like pp said mastitis is a hard lump in your breast, redness, extreme soreness even when not feeding and sometimes a fever.

Catsonskis · 21/02/2023 15:27

I had this!!! No not mastitis, that’s accompanied with fever and Ted/purple skin!

irs unpleasant isn’t it. Heat and regular feeding helped get rid. Do not stop feeding suddenly, if anything feed more and used a Hakka or hand express when feeding on other side. Take some anti inflammatorys or pain killers. It will pass!

QueenLagertha · 21/02/2023 15:42

Sounds like a blocked duct. Guidelines have changed re how to manage this. Try gentle lymphatic massage, breast gymnastics, feed as normal, use ice/cold packs.

Do not use heat or hard massage. This will worsen inflammation.

QueenLagertha · 21/02/2023 15:43

Do not pump. This will not help. Just feed as normal

Did it just causing random boob shooting internally like inside the boob / not nipple and just whenever it pleased? As feeding doesn’t make worse or better :)

Coffeecoffeeinmytummy · 21/02/2023 16:50

@Lanzy yes it did. And although it was painful when it happened it didn’t really cause me mega problems. However thrush then often passes to baby and jt can make their mouth painful and reluctant to feed which can then obviously have negative implications. Have you checked baby for thrush? It’s usually a white coating on the tongue that looks like milk but doesn’t scrape off.
