How to get EBF baby to take bottle.

DD is 8 weeks old, EBF. I want to introduce a bottle and would really like to hear from anyone who successfully managed this! Any thoguhts or tips on how you did it?

She has never taken a bottle or dummy, although we have tried both - bottle recently, dummy at 3 or 4 weeks. It's like she doesn't really know what to do, the teat just sort of sits in her mouth and she pushes it around with her tongue and then eventually pushes it out. A lactation consultant described her as having a "disorganised mouth" if that means anything to anyone reading!

Weve been having some problems feeding her and I received some good advice on here, including to see the lactation consultant who did help. But I also really want to introduce a bottle as part of our solution too.

Try her with a very small cup, or a syringe?

I tried so many bottles! My DS did exactly the same as your baby, didn’t really know what to do with his mouth. The Lansinoh bottles worked for us eventually

Tried everything with my youngest, different bottles, different people, different time of day, tried every six weeks. Spent a fortune on various recommendations and she just point blank refused to entertain the idea.
Her sister took a bottle happily from a couple of months old.
A cup worked first time!
She is still the most headstrong child.

Just be persistent

My son was like this as well. Spent so much money trying everything and getting other people to try and feed him. When I went back to work when he was 5 months old he just used to come back from the childminders with a full bottle of expressed milk every day. He's 17 now and still stubborn about food. Otherwise delightful and his brother seemed to prefer a bottle.

Thanks.. we do use a small cup and a syringe. I dont feel like they are a good long term solution though (also we are doing "top ups" with them and it feels quite impractical to imagine that we'd do full feeds with them unless we absolutely had to - eg if I went to hospital or something). We do have one lansinoh bottle, I'll try some more with that one. Sounds from some posters like she may never get there though, which is what I worried might be the case. I'm hoping for a magic trick perhaps there isn't one.

My eldest never took a bottle so we gave up and then bam one day we tried around 5 months and she took it!

DD2 is now 5 months and still refuses it. I just can't be bothered with the aggro now. I'll give her milk from a cup when she's sitting up and I'll hopefully be able to leave her for a couple of hours once she starts solids.

Keep trying though, you'll get lucky hopefully!

Lansinoh teats fit on the MAM bottles btw, not sure what you've tried thus far but it might save you buying extra bottles if your baby takes to the lansinoh bottle.

Good luck !!
