Gaviscon blocking teats

Eryr22 · 13/02/2023 08:01

My 3 month old had been prescribed Gaviscon for reflux. It seems to be working but it keeps blocking her teats. After 15 minutes of feeding I'll realise she hasn't drank anything!

She's using Kendamil and Tommee Tippee bottles. I've already tried changing from a size 1 to a size 2 teat.

Has anybody else had this problem and how did you fix it?

My son had gaviscon for a while but he's breastfed. Couldn't believe the instructions for giving it to BF babies so I just used to mix it into 1 teaspoon of cooled boiled water per packet and give on a spoon. DR said this was fine, just get it into him.
I found mixing it while it's still slightly warm helps it disolve better.

I used a cup.
I know it sounds mad but it didn't take long for my DD to be able to take it from a cup.

I remember the HV being so surprised at a 4month old drinking from a cup.

You could also use a syringe like the ones you get with liquid painkillers like calpol

Yes!!! I had this problem big time. I still use gaviscon for every feed for my bottle fed 5mo. So I use a prep machine , and the initial hot shot that comes out I mix in the gaviscon with this very thoroughly with a long teaspoon, until you can no longer see any floaty bits in the water. Then continue to make the bottle as usual. If not using prep machine I would suggest to mix gaviscon with a tiny bit of boiling water from the kettle before making bottle as usual. finish off either way by giving bottle a good shake. I'm happy to answer any questions as I know what an absolute pain in the ass this is!!! We use size 2 dr browns teats and rarely have any issues when following above steps x

Thank you so much everyone. I've started mixing the gaviscon with boiling water and a little whisk first and it seems to be working! She's drank 20oz since 7pm last night and it's only 13:20! She's never drank more than 20oz in a 24 hour period before!!

@Scramble1805 oh my gosh I know! I read the instructions for those who are breastfeeding and I gave up half way through because it was too complicated!

Bonus though is solid poo!

Back in the day I used Varioflow teats I don't know if they still exist. Ds is 21 next month 😄

I was loving the solid, easy to clean poos but she's constipated now! Screaming and inconsolably crying whenever she needs a poo. Can take an hour! GP has given lactulose. She's only had one dose so far but it hasn't made any difference. Hoping she'll be better in the morning bless her.

Lactulose is good stuff but can take a few doses or even days to work. You could also try bicycling the legs or tummy massage to help work it through.
