Refluxy baby

Really need advice from other mums with refluxy babies ! My LO is 5 months old and has suffered from reflux since birth. After trying numerous medications which didn't help he was placed on Carobel formula thickener .He has always been a windy baby but since we upped his feed volume which means more thickener things have been awful! He is so so windy, screaming and screaming . As soon as the bottle leaves his mouth he screams and screams. He is Impossible to burp during and after feeds ( always has been) because he screams and arches his back, I am literally clinging onto him to stop him falling out my arms . He is 5 months old and 12llbs. We reduced the thickener which helped the wind but the reflux came back with avengeance. I am so frustrated I just don't know what to do. It is constant burping and crying . 10 minute settled periods and it starts again. I am at a loss and we are both drained 😪 Please any advice would be great. We have been advised to wean early by the paediatrician yesterday but i know that will likely not make any difference for many months. Has any one else been in this situation or a similar one ? He is not thought to have CMPA allergy as we tried this formula and the reflux was the same .

I have a reflux baby who is just 6 months. We use reflux milk (similar to using the carobel) and he's prescribed omeprazole. Our GP told us that nothing will completely stop the reflux until he grows out of it and he is still very sicky. It's frustrating as everything we own is constantly covered in sick and we both get through quite a few outfits in a day. We also weaned earlyish, about 5 1/2 months. He has good days and bad days still and is less content and settled than other babies but he is happier than he used to be.

Have you tried omeprazole? It doesn't treat how much they bring up but neutralises the stomach acid so it doesn't hurt coming up. In combination with the thicker milk it might help. Have you tried Infacol? It has helped us for winding but know it can be hit and miss depending on the baby.

Another thing to consider - my son started doing exactly as you described with his bottle - turned out he wanted more milk and was cross there wasn't any! We'd been advised to try to feed little and often to help his reflux but he was not having it.

What milk is he on now @Npie123?

@ChiefFireOfficerBoyce Thank you so much for your reply. We have tried omeprazole but for some reason it made his reflux worse. I tried to give it 30 min before food but that wait from doing that and then feeding him made him so unsettled so it may be that which caused him to reflux badly after that feed. Infacol didn't help for us but we tried colief which we feel did make some of a difference. They didn't try Gaviscon as it can cause constipation and he was already struggling with that as he wasn't getting enough food in ( this was before Carobel) We did try and anti reflux milk too that was fab for a week but then he got really constipated with a distended tummy . I have definitely considered that he wants more , I have always presumed its just been wind as when the bottle is out of his mouth he arches his back instantly and screams. I think I will try giving an extra ounce and see how he gets on , just so conscious that I don't want to make the wind even worse xxx

@PritiPatelsMaker He is on HIPP Organic now , we tried so many and that is just the one that we were trying when we got the thickener. The dietician advised to just stay on that and not change . They don't think he has CMPA as he doesn't have rashes or excema , he purely has reflux but I always thought it was a symptom of something else so its all very frustrating xx

I've got CMPA and I don't get rashes or eczema. Has somebody told you that they have to have those? Lots of babies and people with CMPA don't have either Wink

crackersforcheese · 06/02/2023 08:00

My little one had horrendous reflux and we used kendamil milk as it has no palm oil which can irritate reflux and he was on omeprazole xxx

Npie123 · 06/02/2023 09:09

@PritiPatelsMaker This is what I thought too! Dieticians don't think he have it , we tried aptamil pepti one when he was 6 weeks old but he refluxed that even more than normal milk as it is thinner. They're saying that if he had CMPA that wouldn't have happened? It should make a clear difference quite quickly. Sooo frustrating don't know what to do for the best. Whether I ask them if we can try it again or whether it's a lactose Intolerance and not CMPA. Its a mine field and every change we seem to make with him he becomes realllllly unsettled 😫xxx

Definitely could be CMPA. Aptamil pepti 1 isn't actually dairy free - my daughter still reacted to it. She even reacted to my breast milk

My daughter is 4 months and has reflux. The GP told me I was wrong, and it was regular posseting- made me feel awful to be honest. And the health visitor wouldn’t refer for allergy tests as she is putting on weight. I’ve tried Gaviscon etc but no help at all, she wouldn’t take the milk with anything added to it. In the end I bought SMA reflux milk and mixed it with SMA regular milk. The milk is now a bit thicker and tastes as close to normal milk as possible. She’s still sick, but no where near as much as she was. She is on 7oz bottles, sometimes will finish it all, sometimes leaves half 🤷‍♀️
