Someone please go back on that forum to educate those people!
The conversation is still going, 8 pages in someone claims a recent research has shown that extended breastfeeding damages children's arteries (???????) and top of page 9, a bright spark has used the b word.... bitty
Why????

it's so sad isn't it. This sort of negative stuff won't exactly help increase breastfeeding statistics.

BabiesEverywhere · 06/02/2008 17:06

As they are sad, uneducated idiots and I feel soiled just posting on there.

Jacanne · 06/02/2008 17:16

I've read it - and wondered about their intellectual capacity. The comments that make me laugh/scream are the ones that assume that because you are BF an older child you don't let them drink from cups/or any other kind of liquid. Oh, and that you can force them to it. One woman decided to "give her breasts back to her husband" - how enlightened. Have registered but cannot comment yet!!

The 'arteries' thing is a total red herring. There was a study published in 2001
read the abstract here which created a flurry in the press - you can go onto the BMJ site and read the correspondence about it, and see links to other studies that showed how formula feeding is bad for later blood pressure and so on.

The study looked at arterial distension in later life and found that people who had bf for more than 4 mths had arteries which were less distendable than people who had bf for less than 4 mths....having less distendable arteries is not 'a good thing' but the authors were careful to point out that their results did not mean people should stop breastfeeding at 4 mths, and they emphasised this.

Read the 'rapid responses' anyway and the other papers that quote this study. It is alarming that 7 years on, some bozo is quoting this paper to diss breastfeeding....

Babies, if you want to use that link to put the idiot right, then feel free. Or maybe it's best to ignore!

Jacanne · 06/02/2008 17:24

I'm waiting to be moderated - what a shame they didn't "moderate" Lucylastic a bit more carefully

BabiesEverywhere · 06/02/2008 17:33

Thanks Tiktok, I posted about that link, I also found a response which claims a baby formula company funded the study which I also linked to.

tiktok · 06/02/2008 17:45

Formula company did not fund the study - it had funded previous studies from those researchers, but not that one.

The study was massively flawed, as it happens, but mainly (IMO) because it relied on recall, and 'breastfeeding' was not defined properly.

Jacanne · 06/02/2008 17:45

The one who is winking alot is really annoying me - I think I need to stop reading!

BabiesEverywhere · 06/02/2008 18:07

Oh Pants I don't think I will correct it on the GMTV site, unless someone comments on it but thanks for correcting me, Tiktok

tiktok · 06/02/2008 18:23

I wouldn't worry, BE....just leave it
I doubt the authors of the paper will sue, and the correspondents on the forum won't even notice...
