Tongue tie and reflux

Did anyone’s baby who have reflux also have tongue tie? If so did the reflux improve after baby got tongue tie snipped?

DS is 12 weeks and had tongue tie initially snipped at 7 weeks but it has reattached and the reflux is awful! He’s constantly screaming, can’t latch onto bottles, weight has been tailing off! Im at my wits end

Tongue tie revision massively helped with breastfeeding latch and therefore reflux, but we also had Gaviscon as it didn't entirely solve the reflux: a lot of it was baby needing to grow into her guts in the fourth trimester/first 3-4 months. I know after Gaviscon there is also Omeprazole if necessary. Best of luck!

We had tongue tie divided at 8 days old, he's now 7 weeks and just been prescribed gaviscon as his reflux is awful. Have been told though that his tongue still looks tight so that could be an issue. We are going to take him back to the clinic where we got it divided to see if they can help.

@CSR721 is he bottle fed or breast fed? I think tongue tie can cause reflux issues so probably worth getting it cut again. DS is having his cut again tomorrow and I’m really hoping it helps! Also booked in for cranial osteotherapy on Thursday. Literally throwing everything at it!

@Flittingaboutagain im so gutted I had to stop BF because he was dropping percentiles fast. Had to move to bottles and really struggled to find one he would take. He’s just not interested as his latch on bottles is rubbish and therefore causing him more discomfort. Hoping another snip will help and make him want to feed

@SassyPants87 he is bottle fed now, as we got off to a really bad start breast feeding between my c section and the tongue tie, it just didn't work out for us. Will deff be taking him back x

Yes my little boy had both and they were definitely linked. The beat thing I found is just as they grow bigger. I known it seems like a long time but by 6 months these issues will be gone.

StarsandStones · 12/01/2023 21:03

@SassyPants87 did they advice you on aftercare? To stretch the wound (after the revision) so reattachment is less likely? It is not nice to put your fingers in a little mouth and have a crying baby, but the result... we also had reflux issues. It became less. Also, time helps, but even so. DD's tongue is much more 'mobile' , will prevent more issues in the future.

@StarsandStones my little boy had his done via NHS and they said no aftercare exercises were needed as it increased infection risk. Seems like people say different things.

StarsandStones · 13/01/2023 07:18

I was told to thoroughly wash my hands. But I did buy a box with medical grade gloves online... just because it felt better to me and was easier to do the exercises.
They showed me what I had to do and provided YouTube videos as well. But maybe your baby was much younger when it was divided. Maybe that makes a difference..

@90yomakeuproom @StarsandStones i think you can do oral exercises rather than wound massage as wound massage can be quite distressing for baby with no proof that it stops reattachment. Also can create oral aversion for the baby which wouldn’t be ideal! He’s having his tongue tie cut again today hope to god it helps with his feeding!!

I was told to do both, multiple times/day.

Indeed, oral aversion can become an issue. In our (slightly complicated) case, I had to do the exercises a bit longer than normal. But I stopped directly when the colour of the tissue showed that it was healed and reattachment was no longer an issue.

If you have more info on the lack of proof of stretching I am very interested!

@SassyPants87 best of luck today!
