Breastfed baby vomiting formula

I have a 5 month old baby who has been EBF from birth. I just recently tried to give him some formula but within 1-2 hours he had vomiting and diarrhoea, and was retching until his stomach was clear. I tried a little bit of a different brand today and same response. Feel awful for putting him through it. He has no issue having my milk if I’ve had dairy so I don’t know what it is that’s giving him the reaction? Any ideas?

He might just not be used to it I started my breastfed baby with expressed milk in a bottle with a tiny bit of pre-made aptamil mixed in. Then half n half then he just had aptamil

Could he have drank too much or too quickly? Have you heard of the paced feeding method?

He has the slowest size teat and I only gave him an ounce today to see how he would react so think it’s unlikely to be too much/too quick (also my breastmilk comes out with some force so he’s used to managing that!)

Maybe I need to try mixing it with breast milk. I’m just scared to put the little guy through it again as both times he has vomited/retched for 1-2 hours after

Hi, did you ever get to the bottom of what was causing this? I’ve had the same issue only he does appear to have milder tummy issues on breast milk so I’m cutting out cows milk and haven’t seen a difference yet

Hi, it was a non-Ige mediated cows milk allergy. After having formula the second time he started reacting to dairy in my milk and was in a lot of discomfort with reflux, not sleeping, generally being in pain. We spoke with dietitian and health visitor who confirmed the allergy and thankfully he improved hugely within about 3 days of me going dairy free.
Sorry it hasn’t been so effective for you x
