babyjj - I bought vacuum flasks for picnics/packed lunches at Xmas at Matalan for £1 each and they work really well...hold about 5 oz.

Lulumama · 31/01/2008 13:41

tiktok.. babyjj is worried that the bottles are only sterile for 2 hours... is that right? i am not well up on sterilising anymore !

tiktok · 31/01/2008 13:44

Bottles will be fine after sterilising, as long as they are kept in a clean corner, maybe with a clean cloth over them - they are not actually sterile, anyway, ever.

Instructions on steam sterilsers and on cold water methods say fine for 24 hours...will check on this.

Absolutely agree about different treatment because you are a traveller being completely out of order.

You can and should report her.

tiktok · 31/01/2008 13:52

I have just checked, and I can't find anything to back me up that the bottles will be fine away from the steriliser/solution for 24 hours! Instructions on one model say '2 hours'.....but you know, I am just gonna use my common sense here and say the bottles will be fine. If anyone is worried, they can keep the bottles in the steriliser/ solution until they're needed, keep the flask with the hot water in, and then make up the formula then.

The bottles are not much of a risk, really, once they are cleaned and all traces of old milk are removed, and then sterilisation just makes sure that has happened. If you then keep them clean (so they can't fall on the floor, or be licked by the cat ) until you need them, what's gonna happen??

The bacteria is in the formula, really, and/or in old traces of milk round the neck of the bottle.

ChristmasShinySnowflakes · 31/01/2008 13:56

I sterilise bottles, then make them all up and as far as I'm concerned they are clean, free from dust etcc once lids are on, so are fine to use within the next 24 hours.

Baby do you have one of these?:

Milk Powder Dispenser

They are very handy as this container has three sections so you can measure out the number of scoops of powder in advance, thus having 3 feeds worth ready to just tip into the bottle

babyjjbaby · 31/01/2008 14:01

thanks gonna go and put bottles on now

i've got this one from wilkos

babyjjbaby · 31/01/2008 14:09

OP posts:
nappyaddict · 31/01/2008 14:10

btw what i normally do is half fill his bottles with boiled water, allow them to cool then when i need them i top them up with freshly boiled water or if i'm boiling from the flask so they are the right temperature but not boiling hot and can be drunk straight away.

nappyaddict · 31/01/2008 14:11

sorry that should read or if i am out, boiling water from the flask ....

PuppyMonkey · 31/01/2008 14:49

My steam steriliser (Tommee Tippee) says bottles will stay sterilised for three hours - it even has a countdown display on so you know when it says 0 you have to go and do it again! But it does only take 5mins so not too much hassle...

Sorry to bring the whole thing up again, but the way Fio is saying to do it is not right any more... that's the way my HV advised when I first had dd2 last April, but it has all changed aain since then. You must do it as and when you need to to avoid possibility of tummy upset.

I still say get the ready made cartons at least for some feeds. No more expensive than getting that poncey night milk stuff.

Sorry if I'm just adding to the confusion! Just trying to help.

babyjjbaby · 31/01/2008 14:57

no i am going to make it up just with the wter in the fridge then heat the water up add milk powder and then leave it to cool for 5 mins u have got the same steriliser to me but i forgot it was3 hrs

OP posts:
babyjjbaby · 31/01/2008 14:59

just checked on my sisters milk carton thing and it says heat water up then add powder u can keep water in the fridge for 24hrs

OP posts:
PuppyMonkey · 31/01/2008 15:01

But you don't need to just heat the water up, it needs to be boiled and then allowed to cool... that helps to kill the bacteria or something.

You know what, I did it the old way for months and months and we never had any trouble! I'm sure u will be fine. Just pointing out the new guidelines...

Ps. Good luck. U got a boy or a girl??

tiktok · 31/01/2008 15:01

babyjj - the water needs to be no cooler than 70 deg c when the powder hits it. So water can;t be in fridge.

nappyaddict · 31/01/2008 15:01

btw everyone remember we don't have to sterilise there is a thread on it here

nappyaddict · 31/01/2008 15:03

i suppose you could heat it up to 70 degrees or whatever it is but it would still need cooling down before being able to drink it.

the way i do it means it still needs cooling down but not as much although if i'm out i must admit i ignore the guidelines and have more cold water and less hot water so it is the right temperature to drink.

PuppyMonkey · 31/01/2008 15:06

Yes I saw that thread nappy... v. interesting. I've just got into the habit of doing it now so will prob continue til dd2 is one!

nappyaddict · 31/01/2008 15:08

lol luckily i read it when i was pregnant!my mum still insisted on buying a steriliser though she uses it but i don't.

babyjjbaby · 31/01/2008 15:13

yeah but i am boliling the water leaving it to cool then putting it in the fridge then heating it up in microwave then adding powder then leaving it to cool
