Formula feeding on demand

Hi,

I'm looking for some advice and reassurance on formula feeding my new baby, who will be 3 weeks old on Friday. I breastfed my last daughter, which didn't work out this time, so all things bottles are new to me.

On discharge from hospital, the midwife worked out that she'd need approx. 16 oz (480ml) of milk over 24 hours from day 5 onwards, based on her weight. She said this is approx 8 x 2oz feeds (every 3 hours), but to do it on demand.

It feels like my little one is constantly hungry and definitely a snacker! Often she'll want feeding much more regularly than every 3 hours. She's taking more than 16oz most days. For example, yesterday she fed 11 times over 24 hours, taking either 1 or 2 oz each time, totalling 21oz (630ml).

She seems quite gassy and possibly a bit constipated (she went nearly 48 hours without a poo yesterday). Am I overfeeding her? I try other tactics to stop her crying, including a dummy, but she is not satisfied until she gets the milk! Does 630ml and 11 feeds seem excessive for this age? She was last weighed about 5 days ago at 7lb.

Any tips or advice welcome! Thank you.

I don't have lots of advice except to say the 3 hour interval is a guide rather than a rule. If she's hungry, feed her. My nephew had a bottle every 2 hours in the daytime until he was about 7 months. Other babies I know go longer.
If it's hot where you are right now the formula will hydrate her too.

Foe gas or constipation, maybe try rubbing her tummy? Or gently cycling her legs.

Congratulations on your little one 💐
