Help! V painful breast

Am bf ds, who's now 13 weeks. Right breast started feeling painful yesterday, almost like a pulled muscle, but nipple was fine and ds feeding no problem, with no pain. This afternoon, I started to feel a nasty pain in the side of the right breast and under the armpit, and that part of my breast felt very hard. DS was asleep, so I expressed and got 5fl oz straight off (this isn't an unusual amount - I express more than that every morning - but I don't usually express at this time of day at all). He hasn't missed any feeds and I can't think of any reason why I'd be engorged on that side. DS has since had a feed, which was painful when latching on and uncomfortable throughout. I had mastitis when he was a couple of weeks old, though that started with a huge red patch on my breast; I can't see anything like that this time. But I think (may be imagining it now!) my right breast feels a bit hot and I'm also feeling generally a bit hot and cold. Back is killing me, too, but perhaps that's just from lugging ds about? Can't carry him on the right side at the moment as too sore. Is it mastitis? What should I do?
TIA

hello, could you maybe have a blocked milk duct? i had some pain when i was breast feeding which turned out to be this, tho as a first time mum i was convined i had mastitis (sp)! is the red patch hot? i went to the doctors after 24 hours as i was worried incase bubs couldnt feed. be worth a shot? let me knowhow it goes x

sounds like mastitus again to me.

ChasingButterflies · 19/01/2008 20:51

Thanks both - I fear mastitis it's rather than blocked duct, though I've not had the latter before. Would I be able to feel a bump with that? Not noticed anything of that kind. Have taken some paracetamol so feeling less hot/cold and will see how I go overnight. Thanks!

i've not had mastitis, but blocked ducts fixed thus: go into shower, warm water, get a wide toothed comb and comb down from above painful area towards nipple.

esmebaby · 19/01/2008 21:04

well i didnt realise it was a blocked duct as they were all raised on my nipple(?!) i had a red patch that was hot on my boob n they said it was that! fishie's right with what to do may be worth to give it a try whilst in shower! x

I had mastitis not so long ago and i felt like i had flu as well as hot boobs. I spent the evening hand expressing what i could and i took a couple of paracetamol and went to bed. I felt better the next day, then more or less 100% by the day after.

Hope you feel better soon.

How are you feeling this morning?

ChasingButterflies · 20/01/2008 18:40

Hi RGP, well, it's definitely mastitis - had to go to the hospital today and am now wrapped up on the sofa with a big box of antibiotics... Hopefully I'll start feeling more human again soon! Thanks for checking
