Marvelon (the pill) while breastfeeding

Wondered if anyone had any experience with this.

My two year old is still breastfeeding (mainly morning and evening, and before nap when he's with me). Not planning to stop just yet as it's been really handy for us, it helps comfort him if he's had a fall, calms him down and gets him ready for sleep etc and generally just a positive thing for both of us. So keen to keep going for now.

He also eats normal food really well.

But my skin is so bad when I'm not on the pill and am getting sick of it looking rubbish.

So my question is did anyone have any issues taking Marvelon while breastfeeding? Do you know why it's technically not recommended? Does it have an impact on milk supply?

I also used to take Dianette for short periods of time which was great for clearing my skin - so also interested to hear if anyone has experience of taking that while breastfeeding.

Thanks!

Are you concerned because it's the combined pill? If so, it is now considered ok to use the combined pill once breastfeeding is established (after 6 weeks). I used the combined pill with my first from about 2 month post partum and just started again with my second now he is a few months old and have had no issues.

Oh great, thanks. Yeh I just googled Marvelon (as that's the one I'm used to) and breastfeeding and got loads of sites saying it wasn't recommended.. wondered if the doctor might say the same, or whether actually it's fine

I don't know the specifics about Marvelon and if it's different to other combined pills but yes the advice did change a few years ago and it is now considered ok (dependent on other factors obviously like medical history). However even my doctor said they didn't recommend the combined pill for breastfeeding despite me know the guidance had changed (she obviously hadn't read that!) as when I spoke to the nurse about it she agreed the advice had changed and it was ok. So not everyone is aware it seems.

Ah ok thanks. I feel quite nervous about taking anything that could impact the milk supply as don't think either of us are ready for the 'breastfeeding journey' to end just yet. But sounds like there's not much risk of that, and wouldn't be the end of the world if it did tbh, grateful to have made it to 2 years, was a rocky start with little one being a preemie!

Did you try it?

Because personally it was going on the combined pill that ended my breastfeeding journey-my son was 2yo and I was ambivalent about whether to give up after years of breastfeeding, so I took the chance & went back on the combined pill. He totally lost interest within a week which was kinda disappointing for me.

@babythrive
Not yet. Aw sorry that happened to you. Did you have trouble getting him to sleep after that? It's very much still part of my little ones bedtime routine at the mo!

@Hagiography
Thanks, seems like they say combined pill is fine but some people do see an impact to supply. So was just wondering if that had happened in real life to many people/ what the chances of it were!
