Breastfeeding and formula- understand milk supply

Hello everyone

I'm a little bit confused and have tried researching my question online and I get the same answer each time...using formula decreases milk supply.

My question is - I feed my DS 3 bottles of formula a day. One in the morning, one around 2 and one around 7. He usually has about 2 or 3 ounces. Everywhere tells you that this will reduce your milk supply, but is this a problem? Obviously you don't need as much milk as three feeds are covered, but does this have an affect on my in-between feeds? These feeds are on demand and sometimes he asks for bf after formula....cheeky.

I only have one side producing milk and formula was introduced due to a large birth weight loss and since this a cmpa has been diagnosed. I'm having a dairy free diet for now and DS will be fully formula fed at some point but I'm not ready to stop bf yet and DS doesn't seem to be showing any signs he is. I'm also not prepared to express.

So after this long message what is the impact on my breast milk?

I think if this is an established routine and it's working for you, then you don't need to worry about supply. It's usually only an issue in the v early days when you're trying to get BF established. How old is your baby?

He is 6 weeks so very young. How do you know if you have an established supply and if they're getting enough breast milk?

Is he satisfied after breast feeds? You'd know if he wasn't getting enough milk, because he'd be crying for more.

There's a book about combi feeding that someone recommended to me to read as I'm combi feeding atm (although LO now 4.5mo) its called Mixed Up. I haven't read it yet as we are quite far into our combi feed journey now but might be worth checking out as your baby still so little?

Your body adapts to what you need from it. Your supply isn’t affected when you start weaning, it adapts.
