10 week old - feeding and poo

DD is now nearly 11 weeks. She been predominantly breastfed since birth, albeit with small top-ups of formula early on as my milk was slow to come in and she lost a lot of weight. From about six weeks, she's had exclusively breast milk all day, with just one bottle of formula last thing before she goes to sleep (4oz).

Until a week or so ago she was pooing around two to three times a day - occasionally she'd go a couple of days with no poo and then produce a poonami. All poo was very soft and korma like and very orange.

Since last week she's suddenly now pooing endlessly - at least eight to ten times a day or more. The texture has changed - it's now very sticky and grainy and less of it. It's more mustard coloured than before as well. Almost every fart she does is a shart. And it's causing horrible nappy rash.

She's fine in herself. Still growing fine. Doesn't seem particularly gassy or colicky. But the poo situation and nappy rash is getting me down. I have no idea why it's suddenly changed so much in frequency and consistency, nor how to stop the nappy rash. I've not done anything different in my diet. She's on the same box of formula for her evening bottle. I'm only using water and cotton wool - no wipes ever. I'm airing her bum as much as I can, using metanium at every nappy change and changing frequently, but it's still super hard to keep the rash at bay given how much she's pooing.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions as to why this dramatic change and how to get back to a couple of poos a day I'd be most grateful!

No idea on the feeding but have you tried putting your breastmilk directly onto her nappy rash? If not try using your breastmilk as an ointment. Worked wonders for my little one when she was a bit sore.

Nappies are constantly being filled when they start teething.

Normal for a breastfed baby.

Use a good barrier cream after every change. Weleda is a nice natural one. If using water rather than wipes- make sure you pat well dry too.

Sounds very normal. We found Metanium really good for the nappy rash.

Are you giving her any vitamin D? I give my 11 week ds a drop of vitamin d everyday. This is important as a lot of infants are deficient in vitamin D. As far as digestion goes, I recommend that you take probiotics or eat lots of yogurt with live cultures in it. The prenatal probiotics would be better because it has extra bacteria strains. To air out ds bum, I lay out a pet training pad and put him on his tummy with his bum up, near a window and let the sun shine on it for about 30 minutes. I avoid mid day sun and keep the window closed.
