breastfeeding 10 month old, pregnancy and/or period symptoms

Hi there, just hoping some other breastfeeding mothers can help me out and tell me what you make of this ! I'VE done a search on old posts but can't see anything definitive and googling hasn't helped much.

DP and I had unprotected sex about 2.5 months ago (first and only time . I know that BFing doesn't protect you, and i could have ovulated yadayada etc..

Since then I've been having continual dizzy spells. Last month i had about a weeks worth of period cramping, coupled with swollen (more veiny than usual) boobs. Cramping & full feeling has returned this month with a vengeance and been going on for about the last 2 weeks.

Over the last couple of weeks, i've been VVV irritable and snappy, had extremely tender nipples, feeding makes me feel really nauseas, i think probably from the cramping i get when i'm feeding, especially at early evening feeds. To the point where i actually dread the 11pm feed because the 7pm makes me feel so icky. I've had a couple of spells of nausea outside of feeding, but nothing major.

So, i would think that given that i'm still doing anywhere from 6-8 feeds in any 24 hrs, with some night feeds, that i can;t be preggers and that these symptoms are maybe just my body trying to return to normal ? however i would swear that i've felt something move (too early surely but honestly i felt something !!) although maybe it's just wind ...

pregnancy test came up negative.

whats a girl to think ? has anyone else experienced prolonged period symptoms without the acutal return of their period ? Or, when your period did return, did you have a build up over the course of a few months ?

Much appreciate you taking the time to read this

I had unprotected sex about 2 months ago. (Took MAP). Have also had period cramps for about the last month.

I have put the continual cramping/no period down to the fact that my hormones are probably just teetering at a peroid/no period level IYSWIM. I don't feed at night.

I would say you are not pregnant due to the - test but you will probably need to repeat!

puffylovett · 08/01/2008 20:46

bumping...

erm I would test again in a week or two to make sure

BUT I had random bouts of cramping here and there (am also feeding 10 month old) and have thought I was about to have a period several times. Finally did just over a month ago (oh joy) but it's not arrived again yet after my normal cycle length; think this might be because DS has cranked up the night feeds a lot in the last few weeks. I have vaguely wondered here and there if I could be pregnant, but I think that was all the hormones from getting ready to start having periods again (BOO). lots of headaches, dizziness, grumpiness etc.

the feeling something move is quite common after you've had a baby I believe - generally it is wind, but now you know how similar that feels to the first movements, it's easy to confuse them.

the dizzy spells could be hormonal, but probably also worth considering low iron/low blood pressure. Or it could be lack of sleep

puffylovett · 08/01/2008 22:02

probably the lack of sleep !! seeing as how he still likes to feed at night

thanks Mrs JC, it sounds like you're having similar experiences ! I suspected it was probably just my body ramping up for a period, but the symptoms are just soo darn similar. (Plus everyone I know has had a steaming cold - and i've avoided it, the last time my immune system was this strong i was pregnant )

I know 19 mths without a period is fantastic, but i must admit - i was hoping for a bit longer

Am equally curious as to irregularities of periods at this age.
Have 9 mth ds2 fully bf 6-7 feeds in 24hrs been going 11-7 for a while now
Had 2 periods at 6 and 7 mths both 28 day cycles bang on.
DP and I usually use condoms (do not let usally indicate lots of sex - simply not ture ) but 2 x straight after period at 7 mths we did it without and I mean the 2 days after it stopped.
here I am something like 40 days... Had oen night woke at 4am cold sweats, mega one sided pain and then it went... no period....
Preg tests are negative [wtf]

puffylovett · 08/01/2008 22:13

not forgetting the increased weeing and rise in body temp

all hormonal i guess piffle !!

Full moon perhaps?
Let's say being pregnant would be ermmm ummm... an interesting development I have always been regular
Shit on the other hand could it be the bloody menopause?

Rosylily · 08/01/2008 22:33

I'm feeding almost 10 month old and no period yet but definately getting pmt and alot of hormonal annoyances....this is my fourth and I usually get my period at this stage, I would sort of like it to start so I can track my mood swings
Unlike you lot though I didn't have unprotected sex so no confusion there for me

MrsJohnCusack · 08/01/2008 23:20

I did not have unprotected sex

gerbo · 09/01/2008 09:33

Hi - was really interested in this post - have felt very similar things to you puffy! Last couple of months I've had hormones all over the place - making me feel 'in the mood' (!), ratty, exhausted, etc.

For the last month or two I also had that bloated pre-period feeling, which lingered, so I did a test too (following not using contraception - clever) which was negative.

I'm also exclusively feeding a 9 months old. Well, I got my first period on Sunday just gone. It's something of a relief as it feels like my body's been gearing up to it if you see what I mean, but boy, I'd forgotten what they're like and it's wiping me out!

So - maybe it's hormone levels returning to pre-breastfeeding, as you amount you feed decreases? Sorry this is a bit rambling- just wanted to say I'v e just been through slmost exactly the same thing. HTH.

puffylovett · 09/01/2008 15:21

ah thanks gerbo, that also makes me feel a bit better ! I think... not sure i'm looking forward to the return of AF, but still...

and as for te decreasing feeds... when does that happen again ??? Someone please inform my little boy
