My ds is 10 weeks old. Probably a non-question but he now likes to latch himself on the way he wants instead of me kind of push him onto boob as I did before. Is this becaus he's getting more skilful at bfing? Haven't had him weighed since he was 7 weeks (was 13lb then) but me and him got on scales and reckon he is about 15. Not v accurate probably. He is filling 3-6 month clothes completely and does loads of poos. Just need someone to say I'm doing it right, I think. It all just seems too fast and easy, iykwim

dinny if its not uncomfortable for you then it maybe fine, do you feel the let down during feeding or prior to?

Lonelymum · 20/11/2004 20:28

Yes I would say by 10 weeks the baby latches on by themselves without you having to check their position. If your baby wasn't getting enough milk at this age I think you would know it (he would cry a lot, wake up from sleeps early, not be very alert, not wee much). HTH

Hemrmykyne, don't feel letdown at all. Do hear and see him swallowing though. And boobs are full before/deflated after feeding. Does that sound ok?

Yes!

When it works well, it is fast and easy - but if you've had trouble at the start, it's very easy to start to think it should always be hard iyswim. Sounds like he's worked out what to do and is doing it - clever Baby Dinny!

think nipples have been so ravaged they are as hard as leather now. if he fancies a chew on them at the end of a feed I don't even feel it! amazing!

My 14 week old has been latching himself on for several weeks now. I did the 'pushing him on to boob' thing at the start too but I think they just learn to do it themselves after a while. Not everyone feels the letdown. If you are hearing him swallowing then the milk must be coming down. It probably seems too fast and easy just because you and baby are so well practiced at it now.

absolutey fine call maggie if you wat too

Lonelymum · 20/11/2004 20:53

It can only take a few minutes to empty a boob. If you mixed fed as I did two of my children, you would be amazed to see how quickly they can drain a bottle, and I can see no reason why a boob should be slower.

Diny -babies are amazing. My current postnatal client has a 4 weeks old born at 8lbs 8 oz, he feeds every 2 1/2 hours or even 3 hours (on demand) for 5 minutes max.... very occasionnally a bit longer, 1 side only has he weighed at his 4 weeks visit to the HV : 11lbs 11oz !!!
So small feeds and very big baby ! His mother was "worried" too.... it sounds too good to be true doesn't it ?
