SMA GOLD ON EASTENDERS?

Dalrymps · 03/01/2008 20:43

I probably don't know what i'm on about but i just flicked on to eastenders and during one scene there was a carton of SMA Gold on the surface in the background, it was the house of the one who has just had the baby with the ginger husband i think (not too sure cause i don't really watch it), anyway i think her baby in it is quite young...
Anyway, i was just wondering if this is allowed, i mean, isn't it like an indirect form of advertising formula for newborns? I'm not totally against formula or anything, I mix feed myself, I just think it seems like their advertising it when they shouldn't? Any thoughts on this?

PCF, it was VERY carefully placed IMO. Smack bang between the 2 characters talking in the scene...

LadyTophamHatt · 04/01/2008 16:40

it the thing being there PCF, not because shes formula feeding.

Neither candyfloss, as has been mentioed, there are two characters with new babies, one is bfiong and one is FFing, so in a way it is 'equally represented', although the chocie of the way the characters are portrayed is a different kettle of fish.

The problem is much the same as Jordan and her SMA, it is not meant to be there, it is breaking laws and codes of some form, and could easily be avoided.

LadyTophamHatt · 04/01/2008 16:41

JV, it was really a brief galnce TBH...

VictorianSqualor · 04/01/2008 16:42

I noticed it straight away, took a second careful watching to notice the cow and gate baby food though.

LadyTophamHatt · 04/01/2008 16:42

Shit, wasN'T a brief glance, it was in shot for a the entire convo betenn the 2 cgaracters.

VictorianSqualor · 04/01/2008 16:43

And there are other tins of formula in Tanya's kitchen, for 'realism' that don't show the brand name, so it really wasn't needed.

hunkermunker · 04/01/2008 17:05

JV, my point being that EE crew knew it was there and it wasn't a little mistake. The programme is made weeks in advance, so it should have been taken out of the scene or turned so the label faced away. BBC programmes shouldn't be advertising anything, let alone infant formula, which is illegal to advertise. If it turns out they did take money from SMA for this product placement, it's illegal.

SantaBabyBeenAnAwfulGoodGirl · 04/01/2008 17:09

if it turned out the BBC had money for product placement i would be very surpirsed

as they were accused of this 2 years ago and the claims weren't afaik substantiated

but in the current climate of bbc scandal of late it would be interesting if an outsourcing company had

VictorianSqualor · 04/01/2008 17:11

The BBC themselves admit to using prop companies on their website. So they do, in effect, 'advertise', which makes the infant formula illegal.

SantaBabyBeenAnAwfulGoodGirl · 04/01/2008 17:12

why is a prop company illegal? that is just outsourcing innit

SantaBabyBeenAnAwfulGoodGirl · 04/01/2008 17:13

it makes any item illegal if it is there with a payment having been taken

JeremyVile · 04/01/2008 17:21

Look, if it offends your own sensibilities to see formula on screen then fair enough, that is your own personal issue (or ishooooo, if you prefer).

But why claim there are illegalities or underhandedness taking place? To bolster your own argument?

You are all entitled to not like seeing SMA on EE, but that does not make it wrong. Or illegal.

Without any breaking of laws or rules I fail to see WHAT you are complaining about but, you know, enjoy if it makes you feel better.

MaryAnnSingleton · 04/01/2008 17:22

am inclined to agree with JeremyVile

SantaBabyBeenAnAwfulGoodGirl · 04/01/2008 17:23

i shall be fascinated to see what replies you get from the bbc

i imagine something about the poroduct being there legitimately i suspect as pertaining to the context

VictorianSqualor · 04/01/2008 17:34

So why is the alcohol not real brands? Why would they bother when surely the legality of that issue is pretty similar.

Anyway, it seems she also has Farleys, on a shelf in the kitchen, I presume the fact that her kitchen has cow and gate food, sma ready-made milk and farleys powder is not accidental, that's the three big companies covered.

Surely even if the legalities are not defined properly, it is at the very least unethical, which goes against the BBC's policies, and would be I would gather their point about the alcohol if it is not actually illegal.

SantaBabyBeenAnAwfulGoodGirl · 04/01/2008 17:40

no idea babe

like on bp they alkwyas have sticky tape over the boxes and on radio one etc they happily say a brand and then just say and of cours rice crip[sies and weetabix are just as delicious as conrflakes

maybe something to do with the fallability of people

JeremyVile · 04/01/2008 17:49

I dont know where you have the idea that they never show alcohol brands.

In the same characters kitchen, there was a forward facing, very prominent bottle of Martini - it was in shot for ages too. (this was on last nights episode too, so i'm not being deliberately obscure).

carmenelectra · 04/01/2008 17:50

ive only just flicked through this thread and i dont watch EastEnders but surely noone can really believe that a struggling mum would see a settled baby and a brand of formula and decide to do that?

its not real life! There people who believe soaps are real life but we cant be responsible for people like that with no common sense!

OK so its illegal to advertise, but whats the difference with showing a tin with no label? People will still know its formula! And will that make all the bf or undecided to buy ff and not bf? no way!

SantaBabyBeenAnAwfulGoodGirl · 04/01/2008 17:51

crikey it must be a dull programme u all distractd by the props

carmenelectra · 04/01/2008 17:53

iknow yeah! glad i dont watch it, it sounds gripping!

JeremyVile · 04/01/2008 17:54

It is BEYOND dull!

MIL is still here so am forced to endure it.

In all honesty, I noticed the Martini but not the SMA.

I also noticed that they all snot terribly when upset.

carmenelectra · 04/01/2008 17:57

People are talking about advertising on here being illegal like it is as illegal as incest or murder or something!

We are just talking about promoting formula arent we? Ok so its not allowed but i wouldnt get that upset about it.

carmenelectra · 04/01/2008 18:00

Tell you what i hope i dont spot any fags on Hollyoaks tonight i think i might start smoking!
