dd is soon to be 2y and we're ready to stop bfing. she currently has one feed per day. if i just stop one day - won't my body make milk for the next day (supply and demand and all that)? and what will happen to it?

Yes, it will. I think the usual advice is to sit it out, don't express (as you'll encourage the supply) and give it a few days to settle down. You can take paracetamol if you get engorged.

justbeme · 01/01/2008 21:11

I gave up after 15mths or so - trying to remember now..... - I think you'll feel full and then your body will absorb it back or something - just like new mums who dont BF. I remember being realy upset on my babys last feed and even crying - but she wasnt at all bothered!!!

DoesntTheFestiveSeasonDragOn · 01/01/2008 21:27

I'd be willing to bet that as you're only doing one feed a day, you won't notice anything if you just stop.

MargoWishesYouAHappyNooNooYear · 01/01/2008 21:31

I dropped gradually - down to one feed at the end. I didn't feel uncomfortable. (just a little sad )

ItsPotatoesForYouMyLad · 01/01/2008 21:33

i can't imagine feeling engorged as i don't ever feel 'full' anymore. just have this thought of milk in my boobs going off!! do we think it's absorbed back into your body somehow then?

We stopped when both of mine were down to one feed a day, just the morning feed. One morning they never asked for milk and I didn't offer and that was it.

Boobs didn't feel any different at all, no discomfort or anything.

MargoWishesYouAHappyNooNooYear · 01/01/2008 21:43

Ooh, I really don't know, that's a good question Potatoes.

ItsPotatoesForYouMyLad · 01/01/2008 23:11

don't get me started on feeling sad. i've been promising to stop for nearly a year. still in two minds tbh.

Im currently thinking about stopping soon too - really worried though as dd only feeds from one side and if i miss a couple of feeds it really fills up. for example i was out last night and my parents had the kids so missed bedtime feed and breakfast feed this morning and I had 2breastpads(which i always wear on one side in an attempt to even them out) and a chicken fillet in my small side and my boobs still looked about 3 cup sizes different!!! Someone please tell me they will return to normal once i stop feeding. dd is 10 months btw.

MargoWishesYouAHappyNooNooYear · 01/01/2008 23:34

How many times are you feeding per day Yelnats?

If you feed 3 times a day how about

Day 1 feed x 2

Day 2 feed x 3

Day 3 feed x 2

Day 4 feed x 2

and try to decrease it gradually like this?

DontDreamItBeIt · 01/01/2008 23:54

yelnats - I fed ds one sided, too and was lopsided, but as he fed less frequently things evened out, and by the ime he was down to 2 or 3 feed a day it wasn't noticable any more.
You really couldn't tell at all by the time I stopped, and they are back to a balanced size.

DS just stopped at abou 16 months and I had no engorgement at all either . I'm sure the milk is reabsorbed if it isn' used IYSWIM, in answer to op.

yelnats · 02/01/2008 11:45

Some days (when not at work) I feed only morning and night. When at home I feed morning, mid morning ocassionally mid afternoon (not if were out) and bedtime. Im fine if i miss the daytime feeds but if i miss early morning or bedtime they are way out all day the next day.

yelnats · 02/01/2008 11:46

should be when at work only feed morning and night.
