Water in between formula feeds

Obviously you offer extra water in between formula feeds when it's hot, but what about when it's not? Some people do, some people don't and I can't seem to find an 'official' answer... what do people here do?

I always offered slightly warmed water to my 3 before each feed - didn't fill them up or put them off the milk, and it helped get any wind up.

Official answer is babies do not need it, so why bother giving it?

I accept people do what they feel is helpful, but I don't understand the link between warmed water pre-feed (what a faff!!) and ease of winding....how would it work?

santaslittlepeatbogelf · 18/12/2007 14:10

Oh god, don't want to start another WW3 about this, but all I can say is it helped my (rather windy) babies.

tiktok · 18/12/2007 14:26

OK!

Was just curious to see an explanation

I take it there isn't one!

Tinkjon · 18/12/2007 15:53

Tiktok, thanks! I couldn't find an official answer anywhere but I guess I didn't look very well Great, I won't bother then - just one extra bottle to sterilise!

MY HV advised to give boiled cooled water once a day when my baby was fully formula fed.I am working on increasing my supply so now he is half on bm and half on formula so i sometimes skip it. But i gathered that if completely FF then its advised to give water to avoid constipation.

camillathechicken · 18/12/2007 17:11

i never did, formula is a drink and food when made up correctly...FF both mine, never had an issue with constipation, but hungry baby milk gave DD bad tummy ache when she was 6 months old. some babies seem more prone to getting blocked up than others.

tiktok · 18/12/2007 17:15

It's all in the Birth to 5 book.

santaslittlepeatbogelf · 18/12/2007 19:40

well of course I bow to the birth to 5 book!

Seona1973 · 18/12/2007 19:53

we dont get that book in Scotland - we have 'Ready Steady Baby' instead . I never gave my formula fed ds extra water until he started on solids at around 5 1/2 months. It isnt really necessary unless it is hot, they are constipated or they have started weaning.

meepingaroundthechristmastree · 18/12/2007 19:57

I'd never heard of giving water to ff babies until now !

santaslittlepeatbogelf · 18/12/2007 20:24

Well, perhaps we can agree that IF the baby is windy or constipated, extra water MIGHT help, but if not, don't bother. Hope this hasn't all been too confusing, Tinkjon!

tiktok · 18/12/2007 23:44

I mentioned the Birth to 5 book not because it is something people should bow to, but because Tinkjon wanted something 'official'

If you found water helpful for your kids' wind, elf, then why should I be bothered?! I was just asking why you thought it worked, that's all.

Sheesh.

silkcushion · 18/12/2007 23:51

I've just had to switch dd (6 weeks) to full ff - was mainly ebm with 1 ff before.

Have given her water in the last few days (not much just a few sips). It makes her do huge burps immediately - no idea why Tiktok
and it seems to make her poo.

I gave water cos I've got real sleeping problems with her in the last 2 weeks and will try just about anything
