Omeprazole/Gaviscon

Hi everyone,

After weeks of battling DD's reflux and numerous calls to the Drs and a trip to A&E, we have finally tonight been prescribed Omeprazole to try. It took a lot of shouting at the Dr to get it done!! But after weeks of my little one suffering I had reached the end of my tether!

She has been on Gaviscon for 3 weeks which at first was helping (slightly) but since she's grown it is no longer helping her enough for her and us to cope.

One thing we forgot to ask the Dr on the phone and they are not closed until Monday, is if we are supposed to continue with the Gaviscon along with the Omeprazole? We haven't collected the prescription yet as they are closed so we can ask the pharmacist in the morning, but if they don't know the answer we can't call the Dr until Monday.

I know nobody on here can really advise too much on medications etc but I was just wondering if any of you had been in the same situation and if the Dr told you to continue with the Gaviscon aswell or to stop that and just give the Omeprazole?

I really hope it finally sorts her out because the poor thing is suffering and so are we as a consequence! Just want a happy little baby

Probably just use the Omeprazole as it's for your baby.

Omeprazole is used to treat reflux on its own and also used in adults to take before taking things like naproxen which can harm someone's stomach.

We used both Omeprazole and Gaviscon with our twins who had reflux.

We were told the Omeprazole deals more with the acidity side of reflux, whereas the Gaviscon acts as a thickener for the formula (not too sure how this works if you're breastfeeding though!)

Gaviscon stopped working for us too after a while so we used this thickening agent called Carobel - again, I'm not medical but it's what a lot of mums & our HV recommended as it helps if baby is bringing up milk a lot.

In the end we had to have dairy-free formula prescribed as our twins had CMPA, which reflux can be a symptom of, so it may be worth looking into this too.
