8 week old and dropping feeds

Hi all

I am going to speak to my HV on Friday when we go for a weigh in but I can’t wait that long.

My baby turned eight weeks and he has now dropped 2 feeds.

He is now taking his last feed at 8pm by the time he is changed, topped and tailed he is exhausted and screams until we put him to sleep.

This means he has now dropped his 11pm feed and also his 2.30/3am feed.

He only then wakes around 4am but doesn’t take more than 2 oz before waking again around 7.30am.

I’ve now upped his bottle to 5oz and he will, if I am lucky, have maybe 5 feeds in 24 hours.

I offer him the bottle sometimes every two hours in hopes he might take an extra ounce just to top him up.

The reason I am apprehensive is because he was taking 7 feeds at 3.5/4oz mainly the latter last week or so. Even at night he was guzzling the 4oz.

That means he had 28oz in a 24 hour cycle and now he is at around 25oz.

He is also going sometimes 6 hours a day without a feed despite me offering him the bottle after three hours.

He is producing one dirty nappy a day (he was mainly one before but sometimes two if I give him gripe water) and still I change his nappy almost every hour as he will cry as he hates a wet nappy.

He does have acid reflux and is now on HIPP organic milk & Dr Brown bottles which has helped. So that’s actually settled so the crying after feeds is reduced and now sleeps better whereas he never slept during the day at all and stayed awake until midnight.

My GP confirmed to not wake my baby to feed as he is gaining weight despite being tiny at birth but at that point the little rascal was waking every 3 hours like clockwork.

I’m now so confused, he seems content with the reduced feeds but his feed ounces have reduced.

Where have I gone wrong?

He could have been having a growth spurt and now feeding has settled again. Their intake will fluctuate up and down over time and just when you think they have settled into a feeding pattern they will change again.

What weight is he?

@dementedpixie thank you I stupidly didn’t even consider it a growth spurt, hence he was guzzling his bottles every 2/3 hours.

Well at six weeks he was 7lbs 1oz, which the HV was happy about as he was born barely 5lbs.

I know for most that’s underweight as my husband’s friend just have birth to a girl at 8lbs so is already bigger than my son LOL

Oh, and don’t worry I’ve been told the amount of ounces was too much for him by hospital doctors whereas HV said ignore and just feed.
