please help me get through the night. (TMI but really need support)..

worst fears are happening - in the last half hour cystitis has gone from twinge to really painful... will need to feed through the night as well but any minute now (based on previous experience) I'm going to become incontinent

have taken 500mg of cefalexin and 2 ibuprofen... please someone tell that is going to work to head it off and I won't be lying on the bathroom floor all night just so I don't pee myself on way to loo. usually have no bladder control with a UTI anyway... baby gonna need feeding 2-3 times.

think I'm even peeing blood now though very difficult to tell as also have the world's worst heavy period for someone who is fully BFing...

oh god, don't know how to cope tonight...

Can you try taking paracetamol as well for the pain?

Have you got somet hick sanitary towels?

I was just off to bed, but I couldn't see your thread and not post.

I really hope it's not as bad as you fear.

you poor bloody thing! how dreadful, am not taking the piss but do you remember the 'im going to pee in a disposable nappy thread'? Perhaps you could 'borrow' one of your dcs...hope you feel better soon...

Ooh, that sounds awful. When I had ds, some of the hospital leaflets suggested using disposable nappies instead of sanitary towels. could baby spare a few, so you don't have to lie n the bathroom floor. Undignified I guess, but then both options are . .

oh god i've had cystitis more times than i can remember. is cefalexin an antibiotic? think i had that, pretty sure it's quite fast acting, keep drinking water and try to flush it through. sometimes i find it soothes it to sit in a bath of plain water and wee in to it, know it's grotty to wee in the bath but it helped me last time, no soap or anything in the bath though. hope it clears up soon for you, i'm sure you know but cranberry juice is supposed to help also, stops the bacteria sticking to the wall of your bladder, i would mainly drink water though as when i have it, drinking other drinks apart from the cranberry) stings more.

don't be tempted to restrict your fluids to avoid going to the loo. It makes things much more painful, as I'm sure you know.

Drink LOADS, and go as frequently as you can to keep flushing the infection through.

Have you any bicarbonate of soda or baking powder in the house.

If so mix 3 heaped teaspoons in a beaker of water and down - you need to do this in one as it tastes absolutely vile.

Bicarb neutralises the acid and stops the irritation and brings quite rapid relief. At least until morning until you get to the doctors.

yes, would say in your situation id have a mattress style sanitary pad or even a nappy in pants so that if you need to let go of a little bit while feeding in the night you can just do it there and then and at least get the feed done and hopefully avoid unsettled baby on top of the crippling agony.

ibuprofen best form of pain relief, im told, as has anti inflammatory too.

and keep drinking the water. much as you want to never drink another drop so you never have to pee ever again, it will help to ease the pain of the next wee. try to down at least one glass every time you pee.

I don't know if this is a good idea medically, but my mum always recommended drinking water with bicarbonate of soda dissolved in it. It's alkaline so counteracts some of the acidity. It does work, ad pretty quickly, but obviously won't help with the underlying infection.

...am in pain but not lying on floor pain and incontinence not too bad as long as I run

nappy idea a good one - will use immediately and have bicarb because of silverette use!

yeah - just drank my last glass of cranberry which I'd been chugging to head off the twinge with no effect - should've taken ABs earlier I guess...

Thanks for the support - I really appreciate it... Will hopefully be able to feed still but will be relying on DH to bring him to me...

gotta go pee down my leg...

keep going with the bicarb and loads of water. warm water can help. if you are bf do not take antibiotics no matter how tempting as you will end up with thrush like i did and its proving a lot harder to get rid of.

thanks everyone for your support last night - I made it through a fairly gruelling stretch and though I'm still fairly unwell, it is MUCH better. Have just spoken to GP on phone and he's happy with what I'm doing.

Just those messages late last night helped me calm down and feel a bit better...

Moocowme - unfortunately I get cystitis really really badly - it's very recurrent and very quick and I literally go from a slight twinge to agony, can't walk and blood and pus in my urine within a couple of hours. I know from experience that in this situation antibiotics are the only option... I keep an emergency dose at home for just these times, and taking it meant it only got to 80% bad last night rather than 100% - that meant I could still feed my baby in the night.

But yes, had thrush in the ducts too last baby and it was awful so now I need some tips for fending it off since have to continue the ABs for 3 days...

Monkeybirds - no advice on the cystitis but can help with the thrush - order some Exspore tablets online NOW and start taking them as soon as they plop through the letter box. They are the biz IMO and the only thing that got rid of my thrush after months of agony. The active ingredient is Extract of Grapefruit Seed (Citricidal) which you can also get as a liquid and add to your washing machine dilute on your nips etc. Thrush hates it. BTW if you use a breat pump/dummy then start using Milton until you are sure that there is no danger of thrush.

I do hope that you feel better soon -it sounds awful for you right now.

Hi all & thanks for the support...

Cystitis is almost gone now (god it was horrible. Must remember never to have sex again... And it was only the once in the last, oh, year ) but ABs are making me feel crap. Have been dosing up on probiotics but will google Exspore immediately - Thanks LL

No signs of thrush yet but I guess I need to wait until well after ABs finished to be sure.
