Shorter Breast Feeding Sessions

Hi all! FTM here to a 9 wk old and EBFing. I’ve a question about length of feeds. So Marnie used to sit on the boob for ages… like 20 minutes and still clusters a bit in the evenings but during the day, she feeds for like 4-8 mins tops and is done. She seems content and in the mornings when I have rock boobs, they soften in that time. She’s still peeing lots and pooping as normal so I’m sure it’s fine but just looking for reassurance that feeds this quick are normal? I don’t think she’s getting to the fatty milk in one feed as when I try and swap her over, her poops are more foamy so I’m keeping her on one boob for a few feeds. She goes about an hr, hr and a half inbetween feeds and like 8-10 hrs in the evening.

Is this normal?!?

Hey, no expert here but my baby was and still is exactly the same. Feeds were always 5-10 mins, I was always fretting she wasn’t getting enough but her weight gain was textbook and plenty of nappies etc. Get booked in for some weigh ins to put your mind at ease and hopefully you’ll get reassurance and can be thankful you just have a speedy feeder!

Hi OP, my baby fed for longer then yours but I had the same experience of feeds suddenly getting shorter. He went from about 45 mins to about 10-15 mins. I think they learn how to suck more efficiently!

My baby went through stages like this where he would have much quicker feeds, then go back to longer ones for a bit.

It’s very normal - they get more efficient at extracting the milk as they get older. As long as her weight gain and nappies are good you have nothing to worry about.

Some babies are able to fully drain a breast in 5 mins. My daughter has never fed for longer than 10 mins. The norm is about 5
