odd - I think milk ducts are a modified part of the sweat system - not sure if that has anything to do with it. Were you dehydrated?

V. odd - milk supply does not turn on and off like a tap, any more than the blood supply.

However, let down can sometimes be a bit flaky - you have the milk but it makes itself unavailable.

I have come across women for whom this happens after a severe shock/distress - temporarily.

Serious illness may impact on supply, as well, but not a cold, and not wham-bam suddenly.

Babies can get colds too, and find sucking hard work.

I'd want to see what was happening before I came to any conclusion!

maybe your body was just exhausted and didn't have the energy to make milk - too busy fighting your lurgy ?

I have a weird one - am fully bf dd3, age 6 months, but have had 2 periods (pause while searching for "sulk. it's not fair" emoticon). My milk supply drops when I have a period, for a couple of days (I can tell cos when I express at work I get half the usual amount out). bizarre.

throckenholt · 11/11/2004 13:45

mine did that - always got less when expressing around the time of a period. And mine came back at 6 months both times - not fair !

secur - you might be lucky - it may have been a one off and you won't get another for ages . Keep up the breastfeeding - that might help keep them away for a while.

The reason some people get their periods back sooner than others is often due to the wway they are feeding. If your baby is no longer feeding regularly ie every three to four hours ROUND THE CLOCK (so including nights) then you will probably get you period back as soon as there are longer gaps between certain feeds. This is why breastfeeding CAN be used as contaception but only if there are no big gaps in feeding patterns. Just thought I'd share that xx

lovely eh - you can either have sleep deprivation or periods .

MKM my dd was feeding round the clock, maybe one 5 hour stretch without at night and my periods came back before 4 months, regularly. I was really annoyed
