Colic - perfect prep machine

Hi all!

Just wondered if anyone has experienced anything similar?

We started our journey in hospital (baby aspirated meconium so we had to stay for 4 days) in hospital we used the hipp organic pre made bottles which he took like a dream, no winding issues etc, when we got home we started using the powdered version of the hipp organic with the perfect prep machine and then we started to notice colic symptoms, fast forward to week 4 he is still in so much pain (lifting knees and crying, going red in his face) we've tried infacol (no great improvement) and now we've started on colief,
I have read that some babies with colic just didn't get on with the prep machine - anyone had any experience with this?

P.s. we have tried aptamil comfort but that just made his stools very runny

Thanks all :)

Hi, I’ve not heard anything about the perfect prep machine causing colic, and I think it’s unlikely. Have you tried making bottles the old fashioned way to compare?

Might also be worth looking into cows milk allergy.

RoseGoldGlasses · 01/10/2021 11:07

As pp never heard prep machine to cause colic.
I would look into allergies and silent reflux.

It also takes their tummies afew days to adjust to milk changes, it can cause constipation etc

Make sure when you are mixing the powder into the hot shot you swirl the bottle to mix rather than shake it otherwise it can end up very frothy which won't help.

Ok great, thank you I have the health visitor coming out next Tuesday (will be a week since I started the colief) if there is no improvement I will definitely ask about cows milk allergy! I haven't tried making with the kettle but I will try that with his next feed! Thank you!

Thank you! I did think reflux, I may go to gp and maybe ask to try ranitidine

Oh ok! That sounds like a plan as we do get a lot of froth on the top and thinking about it when I use the ready made ones there tends to be little to no froth! So would you recommend circular motions for both the hot shot and the cold water after?

Yeah we done circular motions

Hope things improve for you, I know it’s very difficult having a colicky baby.

What bottles and teats are you using? Have you tried any different ones? Could he be taking in a lot of air while feeding?

My 5 month old has always been very windy. I’m sure you’ve tried all sorts but I find the best way to burp after feeding is to sit him on my knee and gently move his torso side to side, back and forward and round in circles. (I hope that makes sense!). Don’t stop until you get a burp.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 01/10/2021 12:08

AFAIK there's still no ranitidine, and that's a shame as it was a godsend when DS has silent reflux.

Gaviscon is quite good for FF babies, It's just a bit useless for EBF. Like a PP's has suggested, sometimes it can be the bottles causing ingestion of air?

Good luck, its very difficult to know what to do when they are that distressed!

Vicky1989x · 01/10/2021 22:32

Don’t think it’s the actual prep machine causing the problems but possibly the temperature of the milk. My DD suffered horribly with colic and reflux - I finally worked out she preferred her milk very warm, almost hot and it would help her burp a lot better.

mafted · 01/10/2021 22:41

Why don't you go back to the premade formula and see if it makes a difference?

Stroller15 · 01/10/2021 22:47

We had this with DS1 OP. Also used a perfect prep - we switched to the ready made hipp and it was a lifesaver. I was very sad to say bye to my Perfect Prep.

tigerbreadandtea · 07/10/2021 20:27

I know lots of people who say the perfect prep was bad for colic.

My daughter was fine for a few days then got progressively worse- screaming, crying, in the end she didn't sleep for more than 40 min stretches. It was cows milk protein allergy. Worth looking into. And (silent) reflux. (Daughter had both)
