Will my milk supply be ok?

My baby is almost 9 months old and is exclusively breastfed, but has taken to solids really well. He has 3 good sized meals a day.

Recently he seems to be feeding so much less and it’s making me worry about my supply. He now only has 3 (or sometimes 4) milk feeds a day, and sometimes they’re very short. I’ve always had quite a fast letdown so I know he doesn’t have to work too hard for the milk, but sometimes he literally only feeds for 3 to 5 minutes on each side before he’s done.

Is this normal for his age? Is 3 feeds a day enough for a 9 month old? I’m worried that my milk supply is going to dip and not last to weaning at a year old!

I'd think it would be fine. The body produces what's needed at that age.

For a while I just fed ds once every 24 hours (we stopped breastfeeding very gradually!) and my body adapted to just providing that amount. Obviously everyone is different but that's just my own view / personal experience, it's a supply and demand thing.

That sounds about right. That’s what I was doing at that time with just the odd night time feed if there was a wake up.

That sounds absolutely normal. They are very efficient feeders at 9 months and it's great news that they're eating food so well. It's the right progression to be making at this stage - less milk, more food. My child naturally weaned herself off breastfeeding at around 11/12 months. For the last 2 months I was only feeding once a day.

That’s really reassuring, thank you!
