Has anyone's baby been prescribed high calorie formula?

My baby will be 4 months at the end of the months and if he's dropped even further on the percentile, he'll be prescribed higher calorie formula by the paediatrician.

He is not growing on the percentile and is now only on the third, having been born on the 50th.

I breastfed but he lost a lot of weight, I then exclusively pumped for 2 1/2 months and then reduced my pumps, switched to formula at 3 months and I thought this would resolve the issue but he just doesn't drink enough. I've been through 4 different types of bottles and the MAM bottles work best for us.

Has anyone had this?

It's my second baby and I never thought that feeding would be an issue. I find it all rather stressful. In terms of development, I feel like he's a lot more advanced than my first was at this stage. He's already rolling from tummy to back, really strong on his arms, smiles all day, really happy and content baby.

My DGD had a high calorie formula as she had severe reflux and would only drink an ounce or so at a time for months on end . The consultant wanted her to have a high calorie formula to maximise her calories . It really helped and after about 6 months she was able to go back to normal formula as her weight was much better

@SuzyDaarling I'm glad it helped. If his weight does not stabilise, I do hope it'll help too.

We're doing a variety of tests to understand as to why his milk intake is low. No obvious signs.

gemloving. It’s such a stressful and worrying thing when they can’t/won’t have enough of the only sustenance they can have. In DGDs case it was silent reflux. She would pull away from each bottle after a few sips or refuse it completely. I think she associated feeds with discomfort and would be too tense to drink because if you waited till she was asleep then picked her up and put a teat in her mouth she would drain the whole thing sometimes. In every other way she was a happy, healthy baby reaching her milestones on or ahead of time. She’s still got a small appetite as a 6 year old but she’s on the right centiles for height and weight. I hope the extra calorie formula helps your DS if the consultant decides to give him it. It was a comfort knowing that whatever DGD did drink was maximising her calorie intake. She also had a thickener in it too for the reflux.

No experience sorry but the not drinking much sounds like it could either be Tongue Tie or CMPA.

Of course it could be neither but it sounds as if it's definitely worth ruling out the TT and reading up on CMPA Thanks

Hey, my little one sounds similar. She is 8 months and has about 500ml a day. Usually 2oz every feed..its exhausting.

She only weight 6.2kg so she may prescribed the high calories formula.

Can I ask how it went for you?
