Did my breastfeed baby stop me getting sicker ?

My 15 month old breastfed DD has been very sick recently with a stomach bug, she is still unwell but on the mend...poor love

Now my husband has been very sick with this bug. Ditto my father who only visited us once for half an hour.

However I have only felt a bit off colour, despite being attached to the germ source all the time (my DD ) and being covered in sick and allsorts regularly.

Now I realize I might be shooting myself in the foot saying this and I'll fall very sick tomorrow but I was wondering could the fact we are breastfeeding have stopped me getting sick?

Mawbroon started a thread about this very phenomenon a couple of weeks ago!

Great off to find the thread

have noticed the same thing myself. Not had my usual recurring throat problem in the last year and barely been touched by colds and bugs doing the rounds.

I'm bfeeding my nearly 10m old baby. I've had the vomiting bug, and now I've got the laryngitis/cough bug.

But maybe it stopped me catching the conjunctivits bug and the diarrhoea bug the kids have also had...

I found Mawbroon Thread

I do get sick though.

My amateur thinking was that it doesn't seem that BOTH my baby and I get sick at the same time. It seems to be one or the other. Usually I'm sick and she's not but the reverse happened this time.

Hey Prunie, you beat me to it!

DS and DP had that bug but I didn't. DS hasn't been breastfed for 11 months. My brother also got it from spending an hour with DS the day after he was being sick.

So it is not just me then

I just found this thread via Google. I do hope this is true! I'm currently the last person standing in my family. Sad

EauRouge · 09/03/2012 10:57

Fingers crossed, gaelic! I've found that my immune system has been near enough bullet proof since I first got pregnant with DD1 but I wasn't sure if that was down to quitting smoking at the same time.

DH is always worst off in our family. I always offer to pump some milk for him in the hope that it will stop him complaining make him better.

I have been breastfeeding and pregnant and bit of tandeming and now feeding one for past 3-4 years and simply don't get 'as' sick as anyone else in the house. Norovirus, colds etc don't touch the sides. However I put this down to me being so sleep deprived that I don't notice how sick I am.

UntamedShrew · 09/03/2012 19:46

Baby DD and I are in rude health despite DTs, DH, DM & DF all having horrendous bug so maybe it is true here too

Or we are just tough old boots Smile

I must the the exception to the rule then...

I have never got ill in my life until a couple of years ago when I was pregnant and now I am BF I get ill every two minutes!!! I've just had my first ever chest infection. DD and I caught the same tummy bug everyone except DS2 had a few months ago too, although DD recovered noticeably quicker than everyone else.
