I am leaving for hols tonight but would really appreciate some quick advice on breastfeeding and periods. My period is 10 days overdue (I am never late) but I have done a few pregnancy tests which are negative. My periods returned around 5 months ago soon after I returned to work and cut down breastfeeding my 11 month old to mornings and evening.

During our 2 week holiday in August I increased the frequency of breastfeeding but I then had a period as normal. I just wondered whether it was possible/normal that periods can stop again due to breastfeeding an older baby (I am now back to mornings and evenings) or whether it is another reason altogether?

The same thing happened to me. I was having regular periods, even though I was breastfeeding, then suddenly one period was skipped. I have no idea why. I certainly wasn't pregnant, although like you I did several tests. I don't think my monthly cycle really sorted itself out until I had completely stopped breastfeeding. My advice is not to worry. Your period will come, it is just a shame for you that you can't predict when! I hope it is a comfort to know someone has experienced the same and have a great holiday.

Many thanks Meid - will give up on the pregnancy tests anyway!

Sounds like it is due to the increased breastfeeding. It is the amount of time the baby spends sucking at the breast that directly inhibits pregnancy hormones. It will probably return to normal once you are back to work. Have a nice holiday.
