Gaviscon vs formula anti reflux

I'm going round in circles with this. Can anyone advise what is best please?

My 7 week old is EBF. He's been suffering with reflux and on Thursday the GP prescribed infant gaviscon. We managed to get 2 doses during the day into him (none on Saturday) and then on Sunday he spent hours screaming in pain due to constipation (it sounded worse than any reflux pain).

Today the health visitor recommended carrying on with the gaviscon and adding a laxative. She also said to up the doses to 6 a day and that I could pre mix this and keep in the fridge to syringe.

Seeing it all in the bottle, I know I wont be able to get it all into him. Plus I've read its salty which must be disgusting for him.

I've just seen that cow and gate make an anti reflux formula. Is it worth stopping with the gaviscon and giving him an evening bottle of this a day instead (it may help him to sleep in his crib too)? I'd like to continue breastfeeding apart from this one bottle.

Sorry, we were FF from the start so can’t help with the one bottle question, but Gaviscon causes so much constipation it’s actually a hindrance. If Gaviscon doesn’t work you usually move onto omeprazole (we had ranitidine but it’s no longer prescribed). Once the discomfort has been dealt with via medication, you shouldn’t need to use special milk.

I did give up on the gaviscon. It worked well quickly but it was just impossible to keep up with the amount needed. It took quite a few days for the constipation to subside too.

We've moved on to omeprazole and I'm not sure if it's working too well but the advice is that it can take up to 4 weeks so I'm persevering.

Poor little things look so uncomfortable!
