Opinions on moving to Stage 2 formula

My little boy is 7 months and is still on stage 1 milk (kendamil). Ive read there is actually no need to move them onto stage 2 so ive not bothered but was trying to buy stage 1 in the shops today and it is like gold dust but always stage 2 available!!

What are your opinions?

I wouldn't bother generally but if I couldn't find stage 1 in the shops I'd either buy a different brand stage 1 or failing that stage 2 of normal brand. But never had to do that. We used Aptamil and always had Cow&Gate as the back up in my mind as word on the street they're the same company.

Terrazzo · 21/07/2021 20:12

Actually if my normal stage 1 wasn't in I'd look for, in this order:

Premade stage 1 my normal brand
Another brand stage 1
Stage 2

I buy stage 2 now but only because I fancied a change and it's £1 cheaper 😂.

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 21/07/2021 20:18

Stage 2 is exactly the same except with a little more iron. It exists only to get around the restrictions on advertising first infant milk.

There is no actual need whatsoever to change to it, and the iron can constipate some babies, but if you can't get hold of your usual stage 1 milk you could certainly offer the 2.

@Terrazzo They dont do pre made and i dont want to give him another brand as dont want upset his stomach ☹️

Delivery online is 3-5 days and i normally buy a few tins as i open the last tin but my other son knocked it off all over the floor so i only have 2 days worth 🙈

@Chanel05 🤣 something i would normally do haha! I did with my first son

@BuffySummersReportingforSanity im definitely gonna keep him on the stage 1 then. Think i will just start to buy online. I wish id of chose a more popular formula that was available everywhere 🙈

We only used to buy it if there wasn’t any stage 1 there.

We were on the cmpa pepti 1 and only one chemist nearby did it so what ever they had I bought 😂

happymummy12345 · 22/07/2021 01:33

I used stage one from birth until 6 months, stage two from 6 months to 1 year, then stage three from 1 year onwards.

Danikm151 · 22/07/2021 01:37

There isn’t much difference in the 2. More iron added in stage 2.
Price can be different too. Eg 2 for £18 deals. Tesco clubcard price. Boots points etc.
It’s because 1st milk can’t be advertised and no special offers allowed.

BertieBotts · 22/07/2021 01:50

It won't necessarily upset his tummy to switch brands, I always think this is a bit of a myth perpetuated by the brand who want you to stay loyal to them!

The stage 2 is less regulated so stage 1 is better in general, but it's not likely to be harmful to feed stage 2 to a baby over 6 months.

BertieBotts · 22/07/2021 01:51

The sugar content is higher in some brands. Take a photo of the nutrition info of your current box when you go to the shop so you can compare.

Paint69 · 24/07/2021 13:50

I never did with DC1. I understand why some people do though. It can be significantly cheaper as there are offers allowed on stage 2 milk.
