Formula feeding question

gemloving · 08/07/2021 16:36

If I use 5oz water and add 5 scoops, it's no longer 5oz after it's been mixed. Would you consider him having drunk 5oz or almost 6oz?

I know it seems silly but we are 9 weeks in, I am exclusively expressing but my supply dropped to 16-20oz a day, so this is the first time I use led powdered formula and not the ready made one. I had him weighed again and he's still dropping centiles which has given me so much anxiety and I will start writing down how much he's drank again. I thought I was over it but feeling sick with anxiety again.

I can't answer your question sorry, but at 9 weeks he only needs 25 floz of ebm a day and you seem to be getting very close to that.

Have you thought of calling one of the BFing Helplines to talk through how your feeding is going and how anxious you feel?

We are formula feeding and were advised that it's the amount of water you've put in. So if you make up a 5oz bottle, the scoops of powder will push it up to around 6oz on the bottle but it counts as a 5oz bottle as that's the amount of water you've added.

Hope that helps a little!

How are you tonight @gemloving?

Santanomore · 09/07/2021 22:27

Each scoop is an ounce. So if you put 5 scoops of formula in, he's had 5 ounces of formula.

FWIW, neither of my two DC had the amount of formula they were 'meant' to. I did stress with my eldest, weighed him loads, measured how much he had etc. But he was having wet and dry nappies and feeding well when he did eat. He never had more than 4oz in one go. Same with my youngest, he liked to graze.

It still counts as a 5oz bottle as it goes by the amount of water you put in.

How many times are you given your baby formula. I had to do that with my 3rd as she was dropping weight but she soon chunked up once we worked it out ..

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 09/07/2021 22:29

it counts as 5oz

@BunnyRuddington I have tried everything and how latch is so poor, that chapter is over for me. I felt so low yesterday as I was home alone with both my children and now toying with the idea of giving up completely even though the guilt is eating me up inside.

@Lou98 thank you x

@Santanomore this sounds like mine. I never thought I would feel so much anxiety and have such worried about weight gain, feeding etc. My first was exclusively breastfed and they always talked about over feeding a formula / bottle fed bab. What a load of rubbish - my baby is bottle fed and still dropping percentiles! My first jumped a centile in the first 3 weeks on the boob but nobody said anything because he was breastfed and can't overfeed apparently but if he had been bottle fed that would have been an issue....?

@rach2713 thanks Rach - I feed every 3-4h, the night feed, 7am, 10am & 1pm are breast, then up until the dream feed its formula and it starts again x

I really would call one of the BFing Helplines, especially if you're feeling guilty.

They are trained Counsellors afterall Thanks
