Is this milk safe (sterilisation question)?

So annoyed at myself! Managed to pump 120mls (the most I’ve ever pumped) today and was so excited! However I then accidentally poured it into a bottle which had been washed in warm water but not steriliser. I realised what I’d done and then poured it into a sterilised bottle so it was probably in the unsterilised bottle for 1-2 minutes and I hadn’t screwed the lid on. My baby was born at 34+5 and is only 3 weeks and 4 days old so don’t want to risk it if it’s not safe. What would you do?

So as far as I know sterilisation is more for powder formula, rather than breast milk. I didn't always sterilise pumping equipment. I'm no expert though. I'd get it in the freezer, which should kill any bacteria, and then heat up before cooling when giving it.

What had the bottle had in it before? It's formula that's the issue. You don't need to sterilise for breastmilk.

If it was a washed bottle it was fine. You could have worse on your non sterile breast! Wink

Thanks all, @shouldistop it had formula in it before :(

If it had formula in beforehand then I wouldn’t risk it even though 99.9% chance it would be fine. Mainly because I wouldn’t want to spend the next 24 hours stressing and wondering if she’d be ok!

If it had been breastmilk then I’d go ahead. Also if it had been in a hot dishwasher then I’d be more inclined but if it was hand washed then the water was probably no more than 55 degrees which isn’t high enough to kill nasty bacteria

It doesn't matter that the bottle had formula in before it was washed. As long as the bottle is clean, breast milk is totally fine to be put in without sterilising it first.

You don't need to sterilise bottles for breastmilk. Some people like to, and that's fine, but it's not necessary.
