Formula and constipation

Hi this is my first post!

I’m having trouble with the formula my baby is having, we changed from breast to bottle at around 2 weeks and since then had problems with bowel moments. Currently using SMA little steps and wanting to change to Kendamil but it seems to be out of stock in every supermarket Sad I also try lots of massage and exercises to help and orange juice, but would rather have a milk that doesn’t cause constipation.

I was hoping I could get some input on what formula people use and if people have had a similar experience with SMA.

What age is your baby?
Orange juice isn't really suitable if they are still very young
Sainsbury's formula is apparently very similar to kendamil

JT89 · 17/06/2021 16:19

11 weeks, yes I know not ideal to give them orange juice but the doctors are happy for her to have 1oz mixed with water to help although it’s a struggle, I guess the taste is far too strong and bitter no doubt.

It can be linked to eczema too (giving citrus juice)
What are the constipation symptoms?

JT89 · 17/06/2021 16:24

Can cause eczema? Didn’t know that!

Hard solid poos! Trying to poo not being able to as I assume there too big! Iv tried so many things even vasaline around the area to help and held up in a sitting position to let gravity take affect which helps but still hard and small. I’m lucky that she isn’t too bothered but she looks very uncomfortable.

Would you consider combi feeding for a short period, to help ease her into it? Or has that bird definitely flown?

JT89 · 18/06/2021 13:48

Yeh sadly not an option Sad I would of kept her fully on breast feeding but unfortunately just wasn't working! Iv ended up buying Hipp not sure if it's any good, but the lots of milks other than the main brands seem to be so hard to get hold of!

I have heard, anecdotally, from mothers who FF, that the products containing palm oil might contribute to constipation. I don't know which do and which don't, but I have heard of people having success in that department when they've switched to formula that doesn't have palm oil in its inngredients. Definitely worth a try I should think?

JT89 · 18/06/2021 20:33

That's good to know actually thank you, I think the Sainsbury's milk that dementedpixie suggested doesn't have palm oil but is out of stock (could be wrong tho only briefly looked at the ingredients) and the Kendamil is palm oil free is also out of stock In supermarkets, you can however get it online but don't want to be on a milk that isn't widely avalable!

Does the Hipp you bought have palm oil?

JT89 · 19/06/2021 05:56

I'm afraid so!

No advice on the constipation but my daughter had Kendamil. I pay monthly for it on subscription and they delivery same day every month. Saves hunting for it in the shops.

PossiblyPertunia · 19/06/2021 06:39

Are you using a prep machine by any chance? They can cause solid poos in young babies so swap to making bottles the traditional way if you are!

JT89 · 19/06/2021 09:23

@Sailor2009 yeh I did look at getting that but what if you run out before the delivery? Do you struggle to find it in the shops too?

@PossiblyPertunia no I don't have a prep machine I make the bottles the old fashioned way. Don't even store any in the fridge! It's so frustrating

I found when I transferred from breast feeding to formula my little one struggled to move her bowels and had some pain. It's because formula is harder to digest. I was breast feeding then had to transfer to combi feeding them due to my milk drying up I had to transfer to formula.
I found a very small amount of cool boiled water settled her.

Sailor2009 · 19/06/2021 09:52

@JT89 she gets through 5 tubs a month so we have 6 delivered just so we have a buffer. To be honest I've never seen it in the shops near me.

JT89 · 19/06/2021 10:18

@Metallicalover Iv tried water too but really struggle to get her to take it!

@Sailor2009 maybe I'll look into doing that, I'm guessing she doesn't have any issues with it?

OP posts:
Sailor2009 · 19/06/2021 11:47

@JT89 no. She has a lot less wind than when she was on SMA. After a few days of it she was sleeping through the night as well which just might be a coincidence but she does seem to be going longer between feeds in general since we switched.

JT89 · 19/06/2021 12:55

@Sailor2009 I really want to try might look into getting it on subscription! How old is she?

OP posts:
Sailor2009 · 19/06/2021 13:15

@JT89 she's 13 weeks. She's been having it since she was 8 weeks.

JT89 · 19/06/2021 13:59

@Sailor2009 Brill I think I might bite the bullet! Thanks
