Pumpers- How long does it take you?

It takes me 40 mins to yield ~90ml (3oz) from each boob first thing in the morning.
The time increases to just over an hour across both boobs for my afternoon and evening pump (so takes 30-40 mins for 45ml each boob individually)
Just wondered if this was average, under or over average!!

(PS I mainly formula feed, but feed expressed milk when I can. I pump 3 times per day with an Elvie. Baby is 2 months old. I am aware of supply and demand ie pump more get more, but I balance pumping/ formula feeding to keep sane lol. Too much pumping was driving me crazy!)

I use the Elvie too and the most it takes to fill the container to 140ml is 40 mins when pumping through the day.
When I've had a 4-5 hour break overnight and pump right after it usually only takes 15 mins but I am EBF so would be down to supply/demand etcSmile

I think loads of different factors influence supply when pumping- my baby is 5 weeks old and I can pump 120oz in 10-15 mins, but then with my firstborn I exclusively expressed as I was unable to breastfeed (I don't blame you for finding it hard, I expressed 8 times a day for a year and hated it. I was so glad that feeding has gone smoothly so far so now I express during the night only so that hubby can give our daughter some feeds). I was always able to pump more at night in the dark and when I was relaxed / distracted. Staring at the bottles was the worst thing I could do! 😂

Thank you for your replies!! Wow you do so well to produce so much milk in a short space of time! Looks like I produce less than average then! I guess this is because I only pump 3 times per day.

Hi Do you pump for the full 40 minutes or have breaks in between? Have you tried going out for a walk with the pram and your Elvie on? I find when I walk my booby must jiggle and I seem to get slightly more milk. Also sunflower lechithin really helps me it makes the milk slippery so it comes out easier.

There are a few groups on facebook for express feeding. It is mainly American groups but ive found them very useful. Google power pumping. It is supposed to mimic cluster feeding and designed to increase milk production.

It takes me 20mins to get 15ml from both breasts. In two days I get enough for a 4oz bottle.

shouldistop · 26/06/2021 20:07

About 8oz in 20 mins

I directly breastfeed but pump every second night before bed so I can have a night off and have a feed in the fridge handy if I want to go to the gym or something.

My midwife told me it’s recommended to pump little and often rather than for long stretches like 40 mins fewer times a day.
Is there any way you could pump for 15-20 minutes 6 times a day just to try and boost supply? Maybe when your baby is having formula just so you form a routine?

In the morning I could get 150ml in 5 mins, but I had an oversupply which took a long time to settle. I don't think I ever pumped for more than 10 or 15 mins in one go, I use a double electrical pump off Amazon, cost about £40. Not that DD likes milk from a bottle anyway!
