Anyone else have a painful let down?

I’m a week into feeding DC2. I fed DC1 for nearly three years so you’d think I would know what I was doing, but...

My letdown is really painful, but only on one boob. Her latch is fine, she feeds well. The other side was uncomfortable and has now settled, so I’m not sure if the painful side will settle down soon too. I dread feeding her on that side ☹️ it does subside as she feeds, but that initial let down is grim! I know it’s only been a week and I need to give things a bit more time to settle. We’re currently in that delightful stage where my boobs are like water melons and the poor baby gets a full facewash of milk before each feed 😂

I did to start off with but it settled down after a few weeks.

Keyperfect · 14/04/2021 21:10

Yes I've had that, really shooting sharp pain. Eased off after a few months. Congratulations!!

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 14/04/2021 21:13

@Keyperfect a few months?! 😭

I think I prefer @Juanbablo ‘s answer!

My youngest is 6yo but those electric shocks through both boobs will stay with me for life. I’m sure it only lasted 2-4 weeks. Felt it thereafter, but nothing like those toe curling early weeks.

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 14/04/2021 21:20

It’s so weird isn’t it. I don’t remember it all all from last time. Unless I’ve blocked it out 🤣

Anyway, it’s making me feel better knowing I’m not alone.

@SaveWaterDrinkGin I'm sorry I meant to say weeks!!! Don't worry Grin

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 14/04/2021 21:23

Hmmm, not sure I believe you now @Keyperfect!

Thank you, I’ll stick with it. I know the first few weeks are the hardest.w

I think it was just a few weeks, in that intense way anyway. Everything like that was worse with the second - omg the afterpains Shock

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 14/04/2021 21:35

Yup. Pain right from under the arm pit. Lovely. First 2 children it settled after a few weeks as supply regulated. 3rd child it was still sometimes painful when they were 2 years old. Weird. Thankfully not all the time!

ThePawtriarchy · 14/04/2021 21:38

I had completely forgotten this feeling until I read the thread title, but the memory almost makes me feel like it’s going to happen now, five years later! It did pass with me, but I think it was a few months in when my supply was more settled.

Disneymum1993 · 14/04/2021 22:03

All 3 times I had painful let down for at least a month it was like electric shocks every time they fed. Especially while tandem feeding dd1 and dd2

shouldistop · 14/04/2021 22:20

It was painful for me for a few weeks too. Ds is 4mo and it still feels tingly sometimes but not painful anymore.

Branleuse · 14/04/2021 22:25

I definitely had this to begin with

SilverStory · 14/04/2021 22:26

Yes, had uncomfortable let down with all 3 kiddos. But when I got actual pain it was because I had thrush. The fact that its one breast makes me think it could potentially be thrush.

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 14/04/2021 22:53

No other signs of thrush @SilverStory and totally painless in between

OP posts:
SilverStory · 15/04/2021 01:08

It's probably not, but just to flag it as a possibility if it continues.

My only symptom was shooting pain on let down. And baby didn't have any signs either.

Springchickpea · 15/04/2021 05:36

I had a very painful letdown with DC2 but we did also have thrush so that’s interesting to read.

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 15/04/2021 08:56

I’m starting to wonder if it’s mastitis. I’m going to call my midwife this morning x

Bobojangles · 15/04/2021 08:58

My baby is 3 weeks and it's already gone but it was eye watering initially

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 15/04/2021 09:00

I’m now uncomfortable between feeds on that side and very engorged so I’m suspecting mastitis 😭 I fed DC1 for three years with absolutely no issues at all. Feeling a bit crap this morning, think I’ve hit the newborn wall!

OP posts:
SaveWaterDrinkGin · 16/04/2021 06:37

Right, not mastitis, she’s just not draining that boob properly. She’s so much less keen to drink on that side?!

OP posts:
shouldistop · 16/04/2021 07:03

My ds has a preferred side too. Instead of alternating, start every feed on the less preferred boob, try breast compressions while she's feeding.

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 16/04/2021 16:01

Nope, it is mastitis! Been prescribed antibiotics by GP this morning

Fantastic. We'll, not fantastic that you're in pain, but fantastic that you found the problem and you're on the way to getting better
