Lazy feeder

Hello all

We're on Number 2 who has clearly not read the guidebook. She's now 10 weeks old and we're do a combo feed of bf at 3 am and 7 am, with expressed milk and ff at other times.
Problem is she refuses to take more than 4 oz either way, sometimes it is only 2-3 oz. Well, we occaisonally get a 5 oz in, but not often. Her sister was regularly taking 5-6 oz by this age.
She's gaining weight well (11.5 lb) and going 3 hours or so between feeds, but she is nowhere near the recommended 2.5 oz per lb. We're obviously aiming to get her to drop the middle of the night feed-but can't see it happening until she's filling her boots during the day?

Any hints for getting her to take bigger feed would be gratefully appreciated!

Jo

Sorry-to add; after 4 oz or so, she just spits out the bottle and won't take any more. She's on 2 hole teats (Avent) and we've tried all the usual stuff-give her a break, change nappy-to no avail. She just cries, and spits out the bottle and milk!

If she's gaing weight and seems happy, alert, lots of wet and dirty nappies, why worry? If she was fully bf you'd never know how many oz she was getting.

I wouldn't go mad trying to make her drop the 3am feed yet though - it sounds like she still really needs it at the moment. Rememebr it won't be forever though.

she's only 10 weeks old, can't you just let her take things at her own pace? it's not really fair for you to expect her to behave like her sister, is it? you're not going to expect her to be like her sister in every other way presumably...

terramum · 11/11/2007 16:43

Sounds like she is full if she is refusing to take any more - would you want to have more food forced on you if you were full?

If she alert, doing plenty of nappies and gaining weight fine then she will be just fine if you follow her cues ...no point in comparing her to her sister - babies are all different

Thanks all.
We're not expecting her to be like her sister-now or in the future; just wondering why, if they are the same weight/size, she is taking nowhere near as much milk as she was.
Anyway, we're not that concerned, just curious. She looks more like Jo Brand than Kate Moss....

different metabolisms and activity levels
ie not all 30yo women of 5'7" and 10 stone eat the same amount.

okay, cool. but she's not perhaps a 'lazy feeder', she's maybe a perfect feeder for dd2

hunkermunker · 11/11/2007 23:17

She's full up then.

Don't stress about it.

Why do you want her to have more milk than she is comfortable having?
