Feeding Issues

Hi all,

New to mumsnet here. Hoping you can help!

My wife and I have a wonderful newborn son, 2 weeks old, bottle fed. When we feed him, he takes in a lot of air - makes loud gulping sounds. I have to burp him all of the time, and feeding can take up to an hour. The teat is full, I have tried sitting him more upright, and we use tommee tippee anti colic bottles. None of these seem to help.

Sometimes (rarely) he sucks much better on the bottle (no air gulps!), but then ends up throwing up all the milk. Maybe this is because when he doesn’t take in air he drinks too quickly.

What do you think? Any help would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Are you paced feeding? As in, baby sat upright and supported and bottle held at shallow angle, not tipped up at an angle where the bottle faces the ceiling. Gulping down air suggests their latch isn't tight enough on the teat so perhaps a smaller or softer teat.

@Notanotherhun yes we’re doing those things. I’ve tried all different bottle angles with no luck.

Is it worth switching bottle brands? I’ve read good things about Mam bottles. Or change teat on our existing TT bottles?

Lactation consultant to check for Tounge tie.

Second the above. Tongue tie can really hamper latch. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00SG7M6JW?linkCode=gs2&ref_=d6k_applink_bb_marketplace&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

My 5 month old daughter has been like this since birth, feeding used to take up to an hour an a half because I was constantly having to stop to burp her, we tried everything paced feeding, non paced feeding, slow flow teats, fast teats every single bottle on the market, checked for tongue tie absolutely nothing made a difference, thankfully at about 3 months almost overnight she just started burping on her own and although she still takes in an unbelievable amount of air when feeding (literally 20 burps for a 5oz bottle over the next 3 hours) she doesn’t seem fazed by it. I think some baby’s just take in more air than others and sometimes there really isn’t anything you can do about it! If he is not in a lot of pain I wouldn’t worry about it, it will either come out the top or the bottom eventually.
