Anti-Relux

My daughter is 13 weeks old and suffers with anti-reflux. I've been to the doctors and they've told me to try her with baby rice with 1 bottle a day. I do it with her second to last bottle each evening which is between 4pm-6pm. After she's had the baby rice she gets really bad stomachache, it does not help with her reflux at all. I don't know what else to do. She constantly looks like she's hungry and rooting for her bottle. I think I may need to change her milk or she could be allergic/intolerance to milk. The doctors seem useless and I feel like I'm doing everything wrong being a first time mum. Has anyone else experienced this with their child/ren? If so what else could I do to help her?

Baby rice should never be added to the bottle, that's terrible advice. Do you mean reflux rather than anti reflux?
Gaviscon is sometimes used or carobel can be used as a thickener
What milk are you using?

Are you in the U.K. OP? I've never heard of anyone being advised to put rice in a baby's bottle, well not for decades anyway. There's some information about it here.

If you suspect that it might be an allergy, do her symptoms sound anything like this?

Just to clarify I'm not putting baby rice into her bottle, I'm giving her it mixed with her baby rice and feeding it to her on her spoon, that's what the doctors advised me to do.

Yes I am in the U.K and I've had a look, no she doesn't have some of those symptoms.

What kind of doctor is telling you to give bay rice to such a young baby? On a paediatrician or a paediatric dietitian should be advising early weaning. I’m in several Facebook groups for babies with allergies and I’ve never heard of a baby this young been given food.

Is it reflux or silent reflux?
Are they upset by it?
Are they following their centile?
Do they have any other symptoms?
Are they being medicated?
Do they think the reflux is caused by allergy, physical cause or a physical development issue?

dementedpixie · 19/03/2021 21:59

I don't see how that would help either
Reflux meds or a product specifically designed to help reflux would be more appropriate

Gaviscon was our saving grace! DSs symptoms were squirming and crying during / after feeding, inability to finish bottle, very frequent and strong acid smelling burp ups. Does that sound similar to your LO?
1st the GP recommended anti reflux milk which DS refused to drink so as a next step, we started adding Gaviscon to his usual milk every single feeding. He was on it till past 6 months and he was like a different baby after just a couple of days.

If the baby rice isn’t helping with the reflux, then I suggest stop giving it. 13 weeks is far too young and it’s probably upsetting her stomach and her digestive system is still immature.

My baby suffered with horrendous reflux. She has gaviscon in her bottles (even now at 10.5 months) which helps.

Things you can try:-
Gaviscon
Carobel - which is a thickener for milk
Anti-reflux formula

Also what helped my baby was using a faster teat (usually recommended slow flow but this gave her horrible wind and made her reflux worse) - it meant she was able to drink more in one sitting so wasn’t starving hungry all the time. May not work for all though.

What are her symptoms?
How much and how often does she have a bottle?
What formula is she on?

BunnyRuddington · 20/03/2021 11:37

Glad that baby doesn't have the CMPA symptoms. If she looks constantly hungry, are you feeding to demand or by a schedule?

I agree with Vicky, if the rice isn't working just stop giving it.

Some things that might help are swapping her to another formula, putting Dentinox in the bottle and winding using the Tiger in the Tree and changing teats. Which formula, tests and bottles are you using now?

I think you should get a second opinion on the baby rice - she’s so young her digestive system isn’t developed enough for solid food, so it is probably what is giving her a stomach ache. It is also nutritionally inadequate compared to milk, and will be filling her up so she doesn’t take on the nutrition she needs in milk.

If she has reflux there are much better options - gaviscon, omeprazole, carobel to thicken her milk etc
