Hi all

Anyone spoken to a dietician they could recommend ? I’m looking for advice for my 11 mo DS who is CMPA and myself as a breastfeeding dairy free mum. Have had so much conflicting advice and also unfortunately lacking support from the NHS team we were under

Thanks in advance

I'm breast feeding my second CMPA baby. Didn't get any advice first time until DS was 12 months old. Second time got good advice within days of dd being born.
Are you happy to ask the questions here and others who have bf CMPA babies maybe able to answer?

Hi, I've had two babies with CMPA and breastfed them both.

Firstly I recommend this website, it's a wealth of helpful information and advice:
dilanandme.com/survival-guide-cmpa/
Secondly if you're on Facebook there's a group called "Breastfeeding with CMPA and other allergies".

Your GP should refer you to a dietician, if they've refused you could get a second opinion and/or quote the Nice guidelines at them!

@NameChange30 Thanks, I’ll check out the blog & Facebook page Smile & speak again with my GP - we had the CMPA confirmed but unfortunately the advice wasn’t great from that point

@sproutsnbacon Thanks, it’s good you received better support second time around!

I’m more than happy to see if any other mums can help. My main concern is around sufficient nutrients for both DS & me - I use fortified milk (Oatly Barista & Koko super), Ds has a good varied diet and eats well. Do I need to worry about iodine intake alongside calcium? I presume Ds is still getting what he needs from me. I take supplements for calcium.

Can I ask you ladies how long you breastfed for? I am happy to continue for now but would like to know the options for weaning - is plant milk acceptable as a breast milk alternative or in many places I’ve read this shouldn’t be given until child is over 2.

Any help would be appreciated

This should answer your questions about alternative milk and vitamins:
dilanandme.com/alternative-milks-cmpa/

Does your DS tolerate soya?
Koko Super and Oatly Barista are both good options (Koko Super slightly better from a nutrition pov, although Oatly Barista is the best tasting IMO!) but if DS tolerates soya, there are a couple of options that would be even better from a nutritional pov: Wysoy formula and Alpro Growing Up Milk. Those two have iodine added, as does Koko Super I think, but Oatly Barista doesn't.

I breastfed DC2 until he turned 2. He did also have the occasional bottle of Neocate but I think the GP/dietician stopped prescribing it after he turned 1, IIRC. It is true that ideally children with CMPA should have breastmilk or formula until they're 2, but in reality HCPs won't prescribe hypoallergenic formula after 1, for budget reasons I think.

DC2 is only 6 months old and I'd like to breastfeed her until she's 2 (like I did for DC1) but we'll have to see how we get on... I've had to cut quite a lot out of my diet and it's a pain!

Sorry that should have said I breastfed DC1 until he turned 2.

I’m still bf dd At 7 months and will continue until 2. I fed ds until 2.9 years when I was 25 weeks pregnant and just couldn’t do it any more. He would have fed for longer.
DS doesn’t drink any milk alternatives and never has partly because I didn’t know what to give him. The dieticians said with dd she could have oatly in her food as soon as she started on solids. She has it mixed in her porridge as my breast milk goes off quick.
I started giving ds the haliborange calcium and vit d softies as soon as he could chew them. I cut them up into thin strips!
I accessed the dieticians for ds via the nursery nurse who did his 12 month check. HVs and associated staff can refer you.
I take calcium supplements a few times a week and a multi vitamin. The dieticians were insistent I took calcium to maintain my teeth and bones but the dentist (his wife bf for a long time) said it doesn’t matter for adults but must make sure child gets enough.
There is a stage 2 cmpa formula that ds has prescribed from 7 months as a top up and in my area they prescribe a follow on milk until a child is 2. It was foul tasting.
I was told dd could have oatly to drink any time from weaning but not as a main milk. I have a dairy allergy and still haven’t reached the top of the milk ladder so milk isn’t a normal drink in our house.
Have you been given information about the milk ladder and how and when to start working up it?

Poley01 · 17/03/2021 14:52

@NameChange30 Thanks, I’ve heard the soya growing up is good but I’ve not tried him on it yet, have been sticking with the oat/coconut.
I hear you, the diet restrictions are a real pain, I’m craving cheese!

@sproutsnbacon Thanks, great advice re the hv, I’ve just moved to a new area so will give them a call and see if I can get a referral that way. We were given a faded print of the milk ladder and told to implement straight away but with no further advice, I’ve since researched and will wait until DS turns 1 next month to try...
