Hi everyone, I’m in need of some help, last night my DD (18 weeks) began refusing her bottle so I inspected it and it smelled AWFUL, like completely sour milk. This was a fresh bottle, I made another one and it was the exact same. So I thought maybe a bad batch, I opened another box (HiPP organic) and it was the exact same! I thought maybe the prep machine is where the problem is so I ran a cleaning cycle and completely scrubbed all the bits and bobs and tried again with no hope. I tried making the bottle with boiled water but it was still sour. I went and bought some aptimil and tried that, DD is drinking it for a bit until I’m assuming it starts to taste sour then she refuses it. It smells the exact same as the HiPP did. Please help I have no clue what is causing this and DD now has diarrhoea and is spitting up quite a lot, I really don’t want to make her unwell, has anyone experienced this or has any suggestions?

Thanks

Is this the first time you’ve ever tasted formula milk?

It does taste vile TBH. God knows why babies like it.

Did you buy both tubs from the same shop? If they haven’t been stored properly, it’s possible that they could both have gone off. I take it you’ve checked the dates on them? I had the same problem with a tub of kendamil formula. It made my son ill and smelled really badly of sour milk but I just thought it was supposed to smell like that. I switched brands because of it. It was only when I ran out of his usual formula and opened another tub of kendamil from the cupboard that I realised the first one had obviously gone off. I wish I’d known at the time because I bought it from a major supermarket.

Any chance you're pregnant or have covid?

Theunamedcat · 14/03/2021 23:23

It used to have fish in it and it stinks

Check your dates and batch numbers and buy a box from elsewhere

No, it has only recently started smelling so horrible and DD has always been a brilliant eater until now

Yeah I thought it was that but I got a completely different formula (aptimil) from a different store so I don't think that's the issue

Omg really I never knew that! Yeah that's what I've done and even bought a different brand of formula and it's the exact same

Have you tried buying a new bottle?

I haven't, I have unused bottles which I have just sterilised to try when she wakes for her dreamfeed. I'm hoping the issue is just the bottles

If you try making up the aptamil formula in a cup using boiled water you can see if it smells off. Obviously she won't be able to drink it from a cup but that way you can check if the problem is with the prep/machine and/or bottle or if the problem is with the formula and/or water.

I will try this! Thank you so much

How are you sterilising the bottles?

Do you descale your steriliser? I had that same one and the limescale it acclimated was disgusting. I switched to a Milton tank.

I haven't done that, how do i do it? I live in Scotland so I don't have very hard water so not much limescale builds up. Did it make the formula smell?
