Help with teat size

DS was EBF, now had to transition to formula for various reasons. 18 weeks old. Is taking 6 x 6oz feeds in 24 hours.

Was managing well with size 2 teats on normal formula (about 15-20 mins to take 6oz including winding a couple of times) but have been advised by GP to try Aptamil Anti-Reflux which is obviously much thicker. Tried the first bottle with his normal size 2 test but he struggled, as expected so moved to size 3 teats for the thicker formula. He’s guzzling and managing to finish 6oz in about 7 mins including stopping to wind 😓 is there a different teat we should be using? Cross cut? Is that even faster?

Did he seem comfortable after the feed using the size 3? Did he bring any up? If he seemed fine with it then I’d just keep going with it.

Why is him finishing in 7 mins a problem?

I had loads of different teats and tried all different ones.

Is he completely emptying the bottle?

@Vicky1989x @Mrstumbletap He’s always completely finished his bottles. Seems completely satisfied after the 6oz. Didn’t bring any back up after the anti-reflux on the size 3 and seemed comfortable.
Probably just me overthinking things 😊 I’m still trying to get to grips with bottle feeding 🙈 I just assumed 7 mins was too fast as it was much quicker than his usual!!

Nothing wrong as long as he is happy! If he has wet nappies and sleeps without wind disturbing him win win.

I always made one ounce extra than what mine needed as if they drink the whole lot, how do you know they don't want more?

So when mine needed 7oz I would make 8/9oz and he would always leave a little dribble, and wouldn't drink any more. That way I knew he was full.

Yeah that makes sense 😊 As he’s got bigger he’s always fussed after he finished his feed if he’s still hungry 🤷🏻‍♀️ At that point I make him up another feed and let him take what he wants then I’ve increased his feeds by an oz from then on and he seems to get on fine like that 🤷🏻‍♀️ He feeds approx every 4 hours day and night and never gives hi very cues in between so I’ve just assumed he’s not wanting more!
He’s always been a windy baby and is quite a bit windier since starting the new formula but it doesn’t seem to be bothering him 🤔 he’s passing the wind without any trouble. We do baby massage at night after a warm bath and make a wee game out of doing bicycle legs at nappy changes just to make sure he’s moving anything that’s stuck 😊

My baby can have 8oz in under 10 minutes sometimes more, if they seem comfortable don't worry about it (we use a variflow teat)

Vicky1989x · 13/03/2021 19:57

I’d just stick with size 3 if he’s happy. My DD used to drink 6oz in 4-5 minutes when she was that age!

Squish3 · 13/03/2021 22:10

@1990shopefulftm @Vicky1989x Thanks 😊 just because it was so much faster than his normal I assumed it wasn’t right 😊 seems to get getting on fine with the 3s so I’ll stick with that just now 😊

Hi I know this is an old post but I’m not sure how to create my own. I was using the Tomee Tippee bottles why oh my new born until 6 weeks and she was always struggling I thought it was the teat size so changed it and didn’t make a difference moved on to laytex nuk bottle and she was great however she’s now 14 weeks and struggling again when she drink sometimes she gulps down 5 oz no problem others she has 2 oz and cry’s she does make a clicking noise with her tongue and it sounds like a lot of milk is going down she also coughs at times should I try a smaller teat? At one point she had colic and I’ve been using colif but how she has less wind however needs to burn a lot during feeds yesterday she had 5oz no problem all day and today she’s just about having 3oz I’m worried because she realised a lot of stool yet not drinking so well any ideas?

Pri1988 · 30/06/2021 13:52

I forgot to mention she’s sleeping normally too so not sure it’s a major problem just don’t know how to make feeds easier ?
