I think I am getting thrush on the nipples. 8 week old suddennly faffing and getting sore - got some down below as well. What is the treatment for nipples when bf? Do I need to go to the doctors? I have some canestan cream, can I use that?

Ow ow ow.

Daktarin Oral Gel for the baby and the cream for your nipples

Best to go to the GP as you'll get it for free on prescription

Good luck with the DaktarinAnd if the Daktarin combo doesn't work, then beg your GP to give you fluconazole... Baby can also have nystatin but lots of people believe this doesn't work well.. Fluconazole isn't licensed for BF mothers (unless things have changed since I had nipple thrush three years ago) since a bit transfers to the baby BUT the baby needs treatment anyway and the stuff in fluc. is apparently less 'strong' or somesuch than the Nystatin which is also less well absorbed.

Lots of people use it to no ill effect and is licensed in the US I think.

Daktarin/Nystatin combo did nothing for my/our thrush last baby round, and only the quick dose of fluc worked - and it worked in a day or so. I took a printed copy of a leaflet from the BFNetwork site to my GP and said I was prepared to sign a bit of paper to say I took full responsibility for having it

Look at various Breastfeeding Network websites or Kellymom or DrJacknewman.com for more info on fluconazole.

thanks for all you advice - much appreciated. I managed to get a cancellation at the docs and have got the 2 daktarins - one for me and one for baby. Will give that a go tonight and see how it goes - will be down there on MOnday for the fluconazole otherwise as I'm not enjoying having sore nips again!
