It might be thrush - how can I get through the day?

I was tested for thrush yesterday. My nipples now hurt constantly and I won't get results back until tomorrow. I don't know how I am going to get through the feeds today.

GP just gave me Daktocort (sp) cream. Its unusual you have to wait for results? I also took raw garlic three times a day (see kellymom website for further info on that) Hope it clears up soon.

stefka have you rung counsellor? do take up her offer to come round, because if it is latch then you can sort it out. i think you could do with a pep talk and to dicuss it all with her anyway.

I am to call her at lunch time today so I will be giving her a ring soon. HOpefully she can come and seem me this afternoon.

stefka i see tiktok is on yoru other thread, she is a trained bf counsellor and has helped many many women so please do take her advice (rather than your midwife's).

it can all be very difficult at first, the shock of having a baby plus learning how to breastfeed. keep posting and make sure you get all the support you need in real life.

If it turns out that you have thrush deep within your breast as well as in the nipple (stabbing pains within breast tissue during and after a feed) you need to get a course of Fluconazole from your GP ASAP. Also start taking Acidophillus capsules (from health food shop) as these will help your body fight off the yeast infection. GP or HV can also prescribe Daktarin anti-fungul cream for your nipples.

Get on to these things ASAP as any delay can make it harder to shake off the thrush.

Took me & my HV ages to persuade GP to prescribe Fluconazole which has caused me a lot of pain and an ongoing thrush problem.

I have to take 30/500 co-codamol and 400 ibuprofen some days to deal with the pain, and sometimes even this doesn't help.

As a precaution, if it is thrush, do all the usual preventative/curative things you would do for vaginal thrush. Cut way down on your sugar intake, eat (and apply) bio yoghurt. and other proven remedies. These will only help a bit with the symptoms, you will probably need cream and Fluconazole as a tablet. If you are desperate you can get the duo canestan pack over the counter with Flucanazole tablet and canestan cream, but I think you would have to be cautious about the strenghths and whether you can continue bf.

Not getting my results until tomorrow now - very frustrating!

Hang on in there Stefka - at least you can get the right help for your problem once you get your test results back. Your pain is probably excruciating and you have my sympathies. I have never experienced anything as painful as breast thrush, not even contractions, and that's saying something!
