How old when stop having formula altogether?

DS nearly 9 months and having 3 bottles of formula a day. Know it's a bit early to be thinking about this, but just so I know what to aim for/expect, when can they stop having formula completely? Know they can have cow's milk as a drink from 12 months, so from 12 months can they have no formula at all and just get their milk intake from cow's milk on breakfast cereal, yogurt and cheese etc with meals during the day, and a drink of cow's milk at bedtime? Or does the bedtime drink stay as formula not cow's milk, for a while after that? Know it will depend on the individual child, but what have your DCs done?

Hiya - I know lots of people introduce it gradually, and that probably is a good idea. However I swapped both my dds onto cows as soon as they turned one and neither of them even noticed !

Thanks chankins and at that stage were your DDs only having the cow's milk to drink (as opposed to on cereal etc) at bedtime, or were they drinking it at other times in the day too?

ds started having cows milk at 6 months on the advice of the HV cos he wouldn't drink formula.

nappyaddict · 23/10/2007 20:39

she said it was fine as long as he had a lot of iron in his diet.

They were having it probably three or four times a day, as well as on food. This was a while ago now though. I'm not sure if there is any advice on whether formula milk is better than cows, or whether at one year old it doesn't matter. Have heard that all those follow on and step up milks are a waste of time though.

I'm trying to wean DD (13 months) from formula to cows at the mo. We are gradually 'watering' the formula down and are currently half and half. The taste is very different as formula is sweet. I think it's fine to swap them at 12 months providing they're eating a good diet and you can give it to them as a drink from a cup and or bottle at bed time. My DD still has 3 bottles a day. I'm going to try and change the day time one for a cup soon but she's never been very interested in milk in a cup so we'll see but I think they still need about a pint a day don't they at that age? Need to check that tbh

Formula has added iron which is why cows isn't suitable as a main drink for under 12 months I believe

Mine were all off it by about 10-11 months.

My two swaped to moo juice at around 13 months and both still have milk three times a day, along with all the other stuff

my 1 year old has 2 drinks of cows milk per day from a cup - at breakfast and bedtime. He also has cows milk in cereal, yoghurts, cheese, etc on top of that. 12-20oz per day is recommended from 1 year but that does include the extras (yoghurt, cheese, etc) so they dont need to take much (if any) as a drink.
