Blocked duct

Helllpppp. I have what I think is a blocked duct. Woke up yesterday to an insanely painful grape-sized lump. We were out on Friday in the park and dd1 refused to feed (8m and this has never happened before) and I slept on my front that night.

So far I have tried hot shower, massage, lots of feeding, elec toothbrush. What else can I try? When I lie on my opposite side the lump is almost sticking out from my skin it’s so big.

Can you see a white head on it? If you can, you can try and dig it out with a sterilised needle (I just poured boiling water over one for a bit!). It's gross, but SO satisfying!

I tended to do it in a hot bath - if you sit in it for a bit first, the head comes up.

Ugh I had one of these for about three weeks, @Smallbus1 - I did everything you described and it still stubbornly wouldn't go. It just took time and lots of massage.

CherryPavlova · 20/12/2020 08:50

I wouldn’t dig it out with a needle, for sure.

Soak in warm bath. Change feeding position to put most force on duct area. Feed frequently for longer periods. Paracetamol.

There is also an old wives tale remedy about cabbage leaves in your bra. Seriously.

WeeDangerousSpike · 20/12/2020 08:57

I think the cabbage leaf thing is about keeping them in the fridge so they're cold isn't it?

Have you got a breast pump? Maybe some targeted pumping on top setting can shift it?

Savoy cabbage really does help for engorgement.
However this is a blocked duct.
As hot a bath as possible with the affected boob in the water.
Gentle oil massage from the outside of the boob along to the nipple.
Visualize the blockage blasting apart and flowing.

When out of bath- feed from that boob, at any angle that feels like it will clear the block. 360 degrees in a circle! Little baby doesn't have to feed from under, go to bed and get safely comfy!

When baby isn't feeding and you can't be in the bath- take a clean fresh nappy- pour hot water onto the absorbent side. Test how hot it is! Then put on the boob!

It doesn't leak and stays hot for ages.
Keep doing gentle oil massage & electric toothbrush buzzing and feeding when you can. It will clear!

The hot water in a nappy trick is great, def not something I’ve heard before!
I’ve tried dangle feeding today and will try again later. Had a good look for a white spot but didn’t see anything, will try again after a bath later.
Persisting with the toothbrush too.
Thanks everyone!
