How long did you breastfeed for?

My baby is almost 3 months. Myself and my partner saw my FIL outside today for a walk. He commented that I shouldn't breastfeed my baby when she is over 1. I want to feed her for as long as she wants it, or until I've decided I've had enough and want her to drink from a cup.

I'm wondering how long you breastfed for as a general "this is when I'll stop/she'll stop wanting to"

Also, if you could give me any benefits for feeding past the age of 1 so that when he talks about it again (highly likely) I have something to say back to him that tells him I won't just stop at age 1.

I started combo feeding DS at 9 months. I’m BF him now only in the mornings and nap time. I plan to stop when he’s 1. I don’t want to extend feed (I think!).

I actually can't quite remember with DS but I think it was about 18 months then he just abruptly stopped one day. I think it was due to teething pain but don't really know. I kept trying for a couple of weeks after but he just never started again. I was distraught for about a week then (probably as the hormones subsided!) realised it was actually quite nice to have my body back, and I was very happy we'd stopped on his terms rather than having to wean him off. I'm still feeding DD at nearly 11 months, no plans to stop any time soon. Agree with others that it's definitely not any of your FILs business and you shouldn't have to give him a reason! But I'm pretty sure the WHO and UNICEF recommend breastfeeding (obviously in combination with solid food) to 2 years and beyond.

And like others have said it comes in really useful when baby is ill. DS had a horrible stomach bug at about 14-15 months and couldn't keep anything down except water and my milk for more than a week. I was very glad I was still breastfeeding him then.

DS is almost 4 and I'm hoping he'll stop soon. I'm pregnant with DC2 so hoping my milk will dry up.

Over 1 year (still going). I had a few comments about feeding past 1 year but I don't see why I'd swap to cows milk over my own when everything was going well.

Almost 3 years here, I'm happy for him to stop now but he has other ideas!!

12 weeks and then I was back at work.
