new teeth, sore nip - OUCH!

10mo DS' top 4 middle teeth have come through recently.

When he feeds off the left breast it is like someone is sticking pins into my nipple. It is awful! What happens now? Will the nipple get used to the friction of his new milky whites?

Seriously, the only pain I can liken it to is that of a pair of shoes rubbing against a massive blister on your foot. Like a constant pain but a bearable one iykwim.

It hasn't happened to the right nipple though. I can't remember breastfeeding ever being this painful. Even when he was days old and I had blood blisters on my nips (although I'm sure I was too busy thinking about my sore fanjo then ).

Ouch crapcook! I sympathise as I've been having this in the last couple of weeks. I'm waiting for ds's first molar to come through, ds's teeth seem to be grazing on my nipple and I've assumed a connection.

Anyway, today has been better! Don't know why but he's not been closing his mouth as much so the teeth haven't been touching the nipple. Maybe the new tooth has stopped niggling him or could be a coincidence. I was seriously considering giving up (ds is 11mo) so I'm pleased that it doesn't seem to be a permanent development. Hope it gets fixed for you soon too.

spooky - Well done on persevering and I'm glad that pesky tooth hasn't been giving you as much jip today.

reminds oneself of the benefits of extended bf

I was lay in bed with DS at 5am this morning feeding him with arched back and fist in my mouth because the pain was so intense.

It is worth it though just to see that drunken look on his face when feeding - he loves it.

That's one of my reasons for continuing - bugger the health benefits, feeding him in bed in the morning gives me an extra half hour . Though as you say, it's been less restful recently... I got a good doze going this morning though.

oh god, i've been dreading this happening. was going to post about wether it hurts !!
DS is 7.3 mths and is about to cut his 6th tooth. He has2 top and nearly 4 btotom. The top ones aren't fully through yet and i'm dreading it.. don't want to give up tho, like you guys - he loves it and i like my easy life !!!

hope someone comes along who can reassure you and therefore, also moi, that it will all be ok...

spooky - definitely with you on the getting extra sleep thing. DS gets up between 5/6am even if I feed him but I get to go back to bed with him mid-morning when he falls asleep whilst I feed him. He gets all excited when I lie him in my bed because he knows what is coming.

Now if I lay him in his cot and tried to get him to go to sleep by himself it would take aaaaaaaaaaages and lots of tears. I know which I prefer...

puffy - I'm just hoping this is a phase. If you think about it, if our babies are feeding and putting their teeth in the way then they mustn't be making the right sucking movements to get the milk out effectively. So they must have to learn to position their mouths so the teeth aren't in the way. Or am I talking a load of shite?

Tiktok et al, please come along and put us out of our misery...

It's just a phase whilst they get used to the new teeth and learn to adjust their positioning.

Seriously, usually lasts between a couple of days and a couple of weeks with dd, depending on the tooth. She has 12 so far, and canines fairly close I think, but feeding doesn't hurt at all.

If he bites btw, then good advice is to pull him into the breast, rather than away which might be the natural reaction, as it will cause him to not be able to breath through his nose, so he'll release his grip, and he'll soon learn that this is what happens if he bites.
