Help! Baby drinking too much?

Hey everyone, so my baby is 19 days old he's almost 3 weeks. He feeds every 1.5-3 hours maximum day and night and will have 4-6 ounces each time. I'm expressing but have to top up with so much formula as I'm just not getting enough milk. Is this too much? On the occasional feed he's had 7 ounces!!! He does take a while to feed because he has a short tongue and he can struggle to latch even onto a bottle.

I looked into hungry baby and I've seen people don't recommend it so haven't tried that. I'm just feeding as he wants but don't know if it's too much or normal. It says babies 2 weeks to 2 months will have about 4 ounces a feed but is this every 1.5 hours? Last night he was up every hour! And would have had feeds easily, but I just would give an ounce to settle him. I don't know what to do. My mother in law said I'm over feeding him and it's not good for him but I remember the midwife saying feed on demand. Please help

I am of the firm view that you cannot overfeed a baby of that age and agree with the midwife's advice to feed on demand

If you were breast feeding rather than expressing you would not know how much milk your baby was taking (that's not intended as a criticism, by the way). You would just be feeding until he stopped.

I'd do that at night too. No point at this age giving him an ounce and then him waking up an hour later.

Good luck
