Newborn 3 weeks and breasts feel empty?

Hi all

Is it normal for breast to feel empty and soft this soon? I'm used to my breasts feeling much fuller but this seems to have changed over night. I also can't feel my let down as much either

I thought it took a few weeks for breasts to feel like this and now I'm worried about low supply

There’s not a one size fits all for all women. Boobs aren’t storage tanks, they make milk as and when it’s needed.

As long as you’re feeding regularly (including at night) and baby is having plenty of wet and dirty nappies, they’re alert when awake, and the fontanelle isn’t sunken they’re getting enough milk.

I think around this time my boobs started settling a lot more and weren’t the massive rocks!

When baby is latched are they having long, slow sucks and can you hear them swallowing?

Hello, mine varied for both my little ones. My first baby (was constantly breastfeeding) my boobs felt fuller more but my second (breastfeeding a lot less but still exclusive) the boobs felt 'empty' and soft. Both got plenty of food 😊
Sounds like your body is only producing the 'right' amount of milk for your baby now so isn't filling up unnecessarily between feeds.

I read a book called milk-it which I found really helpful
It basically says that's a usual feeling for mums, but they aren't empty. Week 3 is a cluster feeding stage, are they feeding lots more? Baby is trying to increase your supply ready for a growth spurt.

I was convinced I must be empty too but you will still produce more. As long as your getting the right amount of nappies etc baby is happy. Your breasts will feel full again soon I'm sure!

Yes, perfectly normal. I remember going from rocks to this, and couldn't tell which side to feed on as I was used to one feeling full and one empty. It was only if I did a double feed from the same side by mistake that I could feel the difference. Most if the time they felt like all the goodness had been sucked out if that makes sense.

Go by wet nappies, that's more accurate.

It used to drive me crazy not feeling satisfied I knew how much DS was taking!
